Project Title: “Sustainable 100w Portable Generators for 24/7/365 Power Demand”______ _______ ________ ____ _______

After spending hours in her grandparents’ apartment in India without power during “load shedding,”  a period of electricity disconnection to save money, Ankita saw firsthand how a necessity was inaccessible to many people.  She wondered whether the common heat sources like gas stoves and lanterns could potentially help provide power for the 1.6 billion people who live without access to power grids. In the United States,  electricity is often taken for granted, and after experiencing both extremes of the issue – no power in her grandparents’ house versus the ability to leave lights and air conditioning on for hours in America – Ankita felt personally affected and was moved to initiate finding a solution to the problem.

Ankita took her idea of a thermoelectric power generator to a local commercial lab, where she and her mentors began laying out a game plan for constructing a proof-of-concept model. The sustainable generator, which includes a solar optical mode, can power a 5W bulb using any type of heat source available to users (she used a Sterno can flame). The generator can be used 24/7 with a constant heat source, made even more accessible with thermal batteries. The generator requires no outlet, no batteries, and is made of cheap materials (like aluminum and $4 thermoelectric generators) – ideal for a rural community.

Ankita attends Princeton University and studies chemical and biological engineering.  She hopes to go to business school and eventually start her own technology company.  Ankita won the 2012 Outstanding Sustainability Award at I-SWEEEP and won first place in the 2012 ExxonMobile Texas Science and Engineering Fair.  Ankita is also very interested and involved in performance arts, including violin, singing, and Indian classical dance.
