Project Title: “The Rhythm of Free Expression: Honoring the Great Jazz Masters”______ _______ ________ ____ _______

Jazz is America’s homegrown musical art and is integral to America’s history, ideals and culture.  Poets, novelists, filmmakers, dancers, and other artists have long been inspired by the freedom inherent in jazz improvisation.  Coleman aimed to continue that inspiration in his generation by honoring great jazz masters through performances of their works and composing and arranging his own music.

Coleman’s project, “The Rhythm of Free Expression: Honoring the Great Jazz Masters,” assembles jazz pieces that represent the evolution of 20th century jazz, the diversity of jazz as a global musical genre, and his experience as a jazz performer. The portfolio includes works in Bebop, Swing, Ballad, Waltz, and Bossa Nova styles by great jazz masters, including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, and J.J. Johnson.  Coleman’s goal was to celebrate jazz music, thereby reinforcing its status as the embodiment of the American ideal of creativity and freedom of expression.

Coleman is a rising senior at Newark Academy. Coleman plans to pursue a career as a jazz musician, composer, arranger and scholar.  Coleman participated in the Brubeck Jazz Colony, the Vail Jazz All-Stars, GRAMMY Camp – Jazz Session, and the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra. Wynton Marsalis honored Coleman with the Ella Fitzgerald Award at the 2013 Essentially Ellington Competition.  Coleman has performed with the Jazz House Kids Big Band, The Christian McBride Big Band, The Michael Dease Big Band, Winard Harper and “Jeli Posse”, and The Mingus Big Band. Coleman runs cross-country and varsity track and speaks Spanish and Chinese.
