Davidson Fellows - 2013 Fellow David Steinberg

David Steinberg

$25,000 Scholarship Recipient

Age: 16
Rancho Palos Verdes, CA
Category: Outside the Box
Project Title: “The Pre-Shortzian Puzzle Project”______ _______ ________ ____ _______

David created a database that quantifies the evolution of the crossword puzzle; like society, crossword puzzles have undergone significant changes over the years.  Data can be statistically analyzed to identify broad societal trends and their implications will provide a wealth of new data to historians and sociologists.

David began the Pre-Shortzian Puzzle Project after browsing through New York Times crossword puzzles published after Will Shortz became crossword editor on November 21, 1993.  All the crosswords published during his editorship are readily available online, but he wondered about the New York Times puzzles that had been published before then, starting in 1942—what they were like, how they compared to today’s puzzles, who had constructed them, and whether they might offer new perspectives on our culture and history.
David is a junior at Palos Verdes Peninsula High School and plans to major in computer science and study Latin in college. Eventually he hopes to become a full-time crossword editor or to combine his crossword interests with computer science and research in artificial intelligence. He is the crossword editor of the Orange County Register’s 24 associated newspapers and under contract with Celebrity Crosswords, an online puzzle publisher. David has published a book of crosswords, Chromatics; constructs puzzles for The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Wall Street Journal, Chronicle of Higher Education, Newsday, and other publications and online outlets; runs a custom crossword business; and participates in many crossword tournaments and puzzle events.
