Project Title: “Quantitative Modeling of Processing Cost and Energy Consumption for Cryptographically Enhanced Secure Internet Routing Protocol”______ _______ ________ ____ _______


Significant security vulnerabilities have recently surfaced in Internet routing, specifically in a globally used routing protocol known as Border Gateway Protocol. As a response, cryptographic methods are being considered to secure the vulnerabilities in this protocol. However, while highly effective in terms of security, these crypto-methods come with significant additional computational costs. Vinay’s research proposes and quantifies the benefit of several optimization algorithms designed to reduce the computational needs of the secure protocols under consideration. He illustrates that these optimizations can significantly enhance computational efficiency, speed up Internet routing table convergence, and conserve energy for routers in a future Internet implementing the secure protocols.

Ultimately, the implementation of secured routing protocols will sharply reduce the frequency and effectiveness of Internet prefix hijacks and data path modifications, whether accidental or malicious.  The implication is that, on average, individual Internet users and corporations will be less exposed to incidents of denial of service, misrouting of data, and eves dropping. This research allows router manufacturers and network operators to become better equipped to handle the implementation of these cryptographically enhanced routing protocols.

Vinay is a rising senior in the accelerated science, mathematics, and computer science magnet program at Poolesville High School and plans to major in either computer science or electrical engineering in college. Outside of research, he studies piano, plays on the varsity tennis team, is the president of his local Mu Alpha Theta honor society, and is captain of both the debate and science bowl teams. Vinay was a finalist at the 2012 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), where he won a third place grand award in the Computer Science category.
