Description:	This merit-based program provides an annual scholarship award of $2,000 to top-ranked high school seniors to attend approved Missouri postsecondary schools. Home-schooled students or those who have obtained a certificate of high school equivalence by passing the General Educational Development (GED) examination are eligible for consideration.

The only way a student can take a "break" and still be eligible is if they were out of school for employment with the government (i.e. military service) or not-for-profit (i.e. peace corps). A student who drops out will not be eligible for the scholardship when he returns. Contributed by: Other on 7/20/2008 I would like to know if a student drops out of school [college] in the first semester of the bright flight scholarship, then wants to return to school, can she/he re-gain the scholarship? Contributed by: Parent on 4/14/2008 I received this scholarship 20 years ago. It is disappointing that the state has not increased this award proportionally with tuition increases in state schools. I see from another comment here that legislation was proposed in 2006 to increase the award, but apparently the legislation did not pass. Bright Flight is an excellent award which is based on merit only, regardless of a student's family's income. I would like to see the amount increased. Unfortunately, it now only covers about one-third of the cost of tuition at the University of Missouri, though there is currently (spring 2006) legislation filed to increase the award amount to about two-thirds of the tuition price. Contributed by: Student on 2/9/2005 If you live in Missouri, and meet the requirements, there is no reason not to take advantage of such an opportunity. Free money is never a bad thing. Contributed by: Parent on 7/19/2004 Caution: Should you have a "Bright" student who wins this award but elects to attend an out-of-state college, the Scholarship is forfeited! Even though Washington University awarded my daughter this award as a transferring sophmore, the state took it away from her.
