I think the movie Fame does not do this school justice. Fame shows a dysfunctional school where academics are horrible. This is not our school, we have wonderful academics. On the performing arts side, we do many unique things like wearing crazy costumes on Halloween or just having fun singing in the hallways. This school is the best I've attended.

I was a member of the Drama Department of the class of 1972 along with Ellen Barkin, Glenne Headly, Jodi Long, and Arnetia Walker. We were the class that danced out into the street on a hot, humid day in June 1971. At that time we were in the building on West 46th Street. The movie "Fame" was based on our class. The lunch room doubled as a dance room, and drama classes were held in the foyer. We did indeed dance on the tables and out into the street! I was there and a participant.

Actually the movie Fame was based on the School of the Performing Arts which was one of the schools that Laguardia was created from. That movie was actually wildly out of proportion, we never dance on tables or anything like that. In fact, we aren't even allowed to be in the hallways for the majority of the time. Although we are not the big group of eccentric artists and musicians that were present in fame, I do think this school is really fun and it was definately a high point in my educational lifetime. I've really enjoyed my time at Laguardia and I think it has given and will give me the background that I need to use my voice in anyway I chose after I graduate.
