Contributed by: DITD Team Member on 2/12/2004 Drawing from a strong entomological background, I must say that I am not terribly impressed. The list is fine, and I guess for someone with a burgeoning interest in insects the selected books do give an adequate introducation. And, in fact, I would recommend Borer, White and Peterson to any amateur entomologist or bright and curious scholars out there. (Borer co-authored one of the best texts on classification of insects that is available, and the field guide here IS a great introduction.) However, some of the other field guides are more pretty than useful or informative. Specifically, the Audobon guides have great photos, but lack the breadth and information that serious amateurs will want. If your YS (or you) are really interested in collecting and identifying insects, I highly recommend sticking to regional guides and manuals that include technical drawings. Although the natural photos in books such as the Audobon series are nice to look at, they do not provide the detail or the proper views for distinguishing among insects. In short, an OK list for very basic exploration of entomology, but if your YS is motivated, the list will likely fall short of expectations. |
