Description: If you are a 16-18 year old girl, love adventure and want to learn about science in the outdoors, this course is for you! Discover the world of glaciers on Mount Rainier, an active volcano with 35 square miles of snow and ice. Experienced mountaineers and a glaciologist will lead nine women on a research expedition to the Emmons Glacier. We'll backpack to a remote campsite, sleep beneath the stars, and investigate glaciers as forces of erosion and indicators of climate change. To navigate the glacier safely, you'll learn basic mountaineering skills, including how to rope-up and self-arrest. The course will begin and end at White River Campground near the park's northeast entrance. Tuition includes food, group camping and glacier travel equipment.
