National French Contest

"Le Grand Concours, or National French Contest, is a French event in the form of a 60 minute national examination, designed, written, financed, and disseminated by the members of the American Association of Teachers of French. Its purpose is to help stimulate further interest in the teaching and learning of French and to help identify and reward achievement on the part of both students and teachers."

National German Testing and Awards Program

Each year the AATG writes a test to assess proficiency in German. Teachers nationwide can offer the exam to their students. The awards program has been around for 30 years and about 25,000 students take the exam each year.

National Latin Exam

The National Latin Exam is offered under the joint sponsorship of the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League.They are pleased to announce the 2003 ACL/NJCL National Latin Exam. It is a national exam that all Latin students are eligible to take.

First Thousand Words in Japanese

For ages 4-8, this book includes lists of common Japanese words in a colorful format. The words are listed in Hiragana as well as English pronunciation.

Guide to Learning Hiragana & Katakana: First Steps to Reading and Writing Japanese

This book is an introduction to the two kana systems. The book covers origin and function, writing practice, pronunciation, and some vocabulary.

Latin Primer, Books 1, 2, & 3

This series by Martha Wilson is a simple, straightforward, traditional approach to Latin, with some adaptations for younger children, including chants and crossword puzzles. All assignments are clearly and directly presented. The series has a teacher's guide, which is purchased separately. Strong grammatical approach; almost no illustrations; some religious content.

Living Books

Living Books is story telling programs with various titles like: Just Grandma & Me, Just Me and My Mom, Tortoise & the Hare, Arthurs Big Trouble and others. It is a great program which helps children read while entertaining them. It also allows you to switch between several languages like Spanish, French, German and Japanese.

Minimus Pupil's Book: Starting Out in Latin

This is a beginning Latin course for ages 7-10 with conversations between a family in Roman Britain (Vindolanda). With many illustrations, the book contains a mixture of stories and myths, grammar explanations and exercises, and background cultural information.

En Famille

This non-profit organization was established in France in 1978. It arranges long-term language immersion exchanges for students ages 9-16. American students are paired with a student of their own age in France, Spain, or Germany. After the two are matched, they spend a year together: six months in their own country, with their own family, and six months with their exchange partner’s family. Teens 14 and up can participate for a period of as short as three months.

Global Student Experience (GSE)

Global Student Experience (GSE) offers summer, quarter, semester, and year-long study abroad programs in Europe, Australia, and South America. Students expand their college education by studying in Barcelona, Granada, Madrid, Paris, Florence, Rome, London, Sydney, Guadalajara, and Buenos Aires.

Learning Programs International (LPI)

Learning Programs International (LPI) was established in 1989 to provide an academically challenging and culturally thorough study abroad program for U.S. high school students. Based in Austin, Texas, LPI works closely with fully-accredited foreign universities and the LPI resident staff in each program location to provide cultural activities, tutoring services, language exchanges, volunteer opportunities, and numerous possibilities for improving language performance. University of Dallas, Latin in Rome Summer Program (TX)

This program is not a simple summer tour, but rather, a rigorous program of intensive study of Latin. Latin in Rome is a college level Latin course and requires that you have taken three years of high school Latin prior to participation. During Latin in Rome students study classical texts and have the opportunity to earn three hours of college credit. Participants study passages from Cicero, Pliny, Vergil and Horace relevant to their travels. Students also read selected passages from these and other authors to enhance visits to sites in Rome and Naples. The academic program includes lectures by University of Dallas Classics faculty who have lived and taught in Rome, daily language tutorials, group discussions of texts, as well as guided visits to the historical sites and world famous museums in the vicinity.

Learnables Foreign Language Program

The Learnables is an auditory-based approach to learning a foreign language. The kit comes with a set of audiotapes and a booklet. No English is used at all; students learn the language through the foreign language tapes and, initially, accompanying pictures in the instructional booklet. After a student acquires some proficiency in the beginnings of the language, the booklets introduce words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs written in that language (still no English translation). Both beginning and intermediate courses are available.

This CD-ROM package is a self-teaching Latin course, allowing multiple levels of students to utilize the program. There are two courses: Level I, which is equivalent to the first two years of high-school Latin and Level II, which is equivalent to the second two years.

Dynamic Japanese (PDF)

This DOS-based program presents the student with spoken Japanese from square one.
