National French Contest

"Le Grand Concours, or National French Contest, is a French event in the form of a 60 minute national examination, designed, written, financed, and disseminated by the members of the American Association of Teachers of French. Its purpose is to help stimulate further interest in the teaching and learning of French and to help identify and reward achievement on the part of both students and teachers."

Panasonic Academic Challenge

The Panasonic Academic Challenge is a highly academic national high school competition modeled after Florida's statewide tournament. Each team consists of six students (four players and two alternates) and one coach. As many as six teams may compete against each other in one competition. This is not a quick response, trivial pursuit contest. Instead, it is a slower-paced tournament in which players are asked questions from the areas of mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, the fine arts, foreign language (French and Spanish) and technology. The questions are written by educators from high schools and colleges throughout the nation.

Concordia Language Villages (MN)

In Concordia Language Villages they have a variety of languages for you to chose from. I went to the Finnish Camp. If you are not familiar with the language that you choose, the one week course is recommended for you. If you are intermediate and have already done the one week course and you are ready to proceed and do the next level in the language that you pick, you go for the to two week course. If you are advanced (or very good at the language) take the one month course, unless you don't feel comfortable staying away from home for such long periods. Keep in mind that you can still take the two week course until you are comfortable with it. You can stay at that level until you are comfortable staying away from home.

National German Testing and Awards Program

Each year the AATG writes a test to assess proficiency in German. Teachers nationwide can offer the exam to their students. The awards program has been around for 30 years and about 25,000 students take the exam each year.

National Latin Exam

"The National Latin Exam is offered under the joint sponsorship of the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League.They are pleased to announce the 2003 ACL/NJCL National Latin Exam. It is a national exam that all Latin students are eligible to take. More than 114,000 Latin students across the U.S.A., Australia, Belgium, Canada, England, Italy, Japan, Scotland, New Zealand, the Republic of South Africa, and Zimbabwe took the 2001 National Latin Exam, a significant increase since its inception in 1978 when 6000 students enrolled."

Discovering Languages Series

Amsco's "Discovering Languages" series of textbooks, teacher's guides, and cassettes, were designed to provide exploratory experiences in five foreign languages: French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. The focus is on "limited language acquisition and extensive cultural awareness. . .designed for a one-semester course in upper-elementary or middle-school foreign language exploratory programs." The student book is a workbook-style text in four colors, engagingly illustrated.

First Thousand Words in Japanese

This book includes lists of common Japanese words in a very colorful format. The words are listed in Hiragana as well as English pronunciation.

Guide to Learning Hiragana & Katakana

This book is an introduction to the two kana systems. The book covers origin and function, writing practice, pronunciation, and some vocabulary.

Latin Primer, Books 1, 2, & 3

This series is a simple, straightforward, traditional approach to Latin, with some adaptations for younger children, including chants and crossword puzzles. All assignments are clearly and directly presented. The series has a teacher's guide, which is purchased separately. Strong grammatical approach; almost no illustrations; some religious content.

Minimus Pupil's Book: Starting Out in Latin

This is a beginning Latin course in cartoon type form. It is Latin conversations between a family in Britian (Vindolanda), that covers basic grammar and Latin vocabulary.

BK Play Academy for Gifted Children (Bellevue, WA)

This Washington state certified private school for Preschool through 2nd Grade offers inquiry-based and hands-on programs for gifted children. Children are grouped by ability rather than age. IQ testing is required for admission; acceptance into the program generally requires a result greater than the 90th percentile for preschoolers or 95th percentile for kindergarten students.

FALCON - Cornell University (NY)

The FALCON program (Full-year Asian Language CONcentration) is a concentrated Chinese or Japanese language program that allows beginning students to learn the language at an advanced pace. Students may attend for the full year or just do the summer program for an advanced introduction. This would be good for students who wish to travel to Asia, work in the international market or further their academic study.

Center for Cultural Interchange (CCI) International Youth Camp

Since 1985, Center for Cultural Interchange (CCI) has been dedicated to the promotion of cultural understanding, academic development and world peace. This is a great site for summer camps abroad. CCI camps provide high quality supervision and many activities including a variety of sports, language classes, and social events. CCI Youth Camps are perfect for the young traveler or students wanting a more sports oriented program. Programs are available for students between the ages of 10 – 17 with beginning to advanced language abilities. Generally, several 2, 3 and 4 week sessions are available during the summer. Learnables Foreign Language Program

The Learnables is an auditory-based approach to learning a foreign language. The kit comes with a set of audiotapes and a booklet. No English is used at all; students learn the language through the foreign language tapes and, initially, accompanying pictures in the instructional booklet. After a student acquires some proficiency in the beginnings of the language, the booklets introduce words, phrases, sentences, and paragraphs written in that language (still no English translation). Both beginning and intermediate courses are available.

Spanish Multimedia

University of Dallas, Latin in Rome Summer Program (TX)

Summer Latin in Rome began 30 years ago by Father Reginald Foster. The program is run by Fr. Foster at a convent in Rome, but students do not need to be priests, monks, nuns, Catholics, or Christians. Students need only to possess knowledge of Latin, love of the language, and the ability to work consistently at learning more. Forty to fifty students are chosen each year to participate in the program. The students are split into 2 groups, the intermediate group and the advanced group. The program lasts approximately 6 weeks from early June to mid-July. Classes are 6 days per week, approximately 3 hours each with optional sessions in the evenings and excursions on Sundays.

Mas arriba

This website offers an electronic workbook of introductory Spanish language exercises, based on visual association. Although the material of Mas arriba is designed to accompany the "Brief Edition of Arriba! Communicacion y Cultura" (2001 by Prentice Hall), you may discover that the exercises can be adapted quite easily to other textbooks and approaches.

National Spanish Examinations (NSE)

Power-Glide's approach to teaching foreign languages is very popular with homeschoolers, because neither a parent nor a tutor who knows the language is required to use the materials. This CD-ROM package is designed as a self-teaching Latin course, allowing multiple levels of students to utilize the program. Dynamic Japanese (PDF)
