American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras

Virginians under 21 can join one of the American Youth Philharmonic Orchestras, with two training orchestras and two symphonic orchestras. Promising musicians have the opportunity to work closely with conductors and coaches for intense training and development. Each student prepares at least three repertoire programs for performance. Rehearsal times are Monday evenings September through May.

Arts Recognition and Talent Search

Arts Recognition and Talent Search (ARTS) recognizes artistically accomplished high school seniors in the areas of dance, music, visual arts, film/video, photography, voice, jazz, theather and writing with cash awards and scholarships. In addition, the NFAA nominates up to 50 National ARTS winners each year to the Presidential Scholar Foundation for consideration in the commission's selection of the twenty Presidential Scholars in the ARTS.

Songs of Love

"Songs of Love is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating personalized songs for chronically and terminally ill children and young adults. These one-of-a-kind compositions are a wonderful source of joy and inspiration to the special people who receive them." Brevard Music Center (NC)

Each summer more than 400 students, ages 14 through post-college, join professional musicians to eat, breathe and sleep music for seven weeks. In addition to a rigorous schedule of instruction, students collaborate with faculty and guest artists in more than eighty public performances. The combination of studying with distinguished professional musicians and an intense performance schedule sets the Brevard Music Center apart from other summer music institutions and gives students the opportunity to understand the world of a professional musician.

    Longhorn Music Camp - The University of Texas School of Music (Austin, TX)

    Founded as an outreach program of The University of Texas School of Music in 1979, the Longhorn Music Camp is now one of the premier summer music programs in Texas.     West Virginia Governor's School for the Arts (GSA)

    West Virginia Governor's School for the Arts (GSA) is a three-week residential program providing individual and in-depth group instruction in the arts for current high school sophomores living in and attending school in West Virginia. Areas addressed are dance, theatre, vocal music, instrumental music, and visual art. Skilled artists/teachers will work with students who demonstrate potential in those areas. In addition, the Governor's School for the Arts attempts to broaden the students' understanding of the arts through interdisciplinary courses focusing on common elements in the arts disciplines.

    Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp (MI)

    Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, a summer school of the arts located in Michigan’s Manistee National Forest, offers fine arts education for all ages. The summer camp annually serves 5,000 gifted elementary, junior high and high school students with diverse programs in music, art, dance, and drama. Since its inception in 1966, Blue Lake has provided cultural enrichment to more than 250,000 gifted students and countless concert-goers. Programs are designed to educate through a carefully developed and balanced curriculum as well as elective courses in art, drama, dance, or music.     Bowling Green Summer Music Institute (BGSU)

    The Summer Music Institute is a program of intensive music camps designed for high school and junior high school students, sponsored by the College of Musical Arts. Starting from two one-week music camps in 1981, the Summer Music Institute has grown to as many as nine camps each summer. A College of Musical Arts faculty member serves as the director of each camp and is responsible for staff assignments and curriculum.

    New York State Summer School of the Arts

    "Summer residential programs for New York State high school students which provide intensive pre-professional training with internationally acclaimed artists and artistic companies. It's an intense and exciting residential participatory learning experience held each summer. It's open to all New York State high school age students who qualify through audition. Tuition assistance is available. No students who qualify will be denied NYSSSA's opportunities just because they can't afford the tuition.     Northwestern University School of Music - Summer Program (Evanston, IL)

    An integral part of Northwestern University's acclaimed Henry and Leigh Bienen School of Music, the National High School Music Institute offers an intimate look at collegiate-level music study and music as a career. The institute offers an ideally challenging summer to the serious high school musician. NHSMI is one of seven divisions of Northwestern's National High School Institute, which each summer enrolls approximately 700 of the nation's most accomplished students.

    Suzuki Summer Institute

    Summer Suzuki Institutes are special camps that provide an intensive musical experience for families with children who currently study an instrument through the Suzuki Method. Institutes are located in all regions of the U.S. and Canada, offering activities for students, parents and teachers in one-week sessions throughout the summer. The Suzuki Summer Institutes provide a unique opportunity for families to focus on music outside the usual constraints of daily life. Suzuki Summer Institute offerings include master classes, group classes and recitals as well as enrichment courses that range from theory, improvisation and chamber music to choir, drama and fiddling. Parents attend classes with their children. Many institutes also offer lectures and discussion groups for parents, special activities for siblings, and social events such as picnics and family fun nights.

    The Center for Creative Youth at Wesleyan University

    The Center for Creative Youth (CCY), a summer pre-college program, offers talented high school students five weeks of intensive study in the arts at Wesleyan University, one of the country's most distinguished liberal arts colleges. CCY, a program of the Capitol Region Education Council and sponsored by and in collaboration with Wesleyan's Graduate Liberal Studies Program and Wesleyan's Center for the Arts, emphasizes multicultural and interdisciplinary learning, critical thinking and leadership.     Vermont Governor's Institute on the Arts

    The Vermont Governor's Institute on the Arts can be described as artistic excellence, challenge, and excitement, and is designed to celebrate and explore the creative experience. The Arts Institute enrolls about 125 students. It is our largest Institute and is held on the campus of Castleton State College in Castleton, Vermont.     Center for Musical Theater Arts in Worcester County (Berlin, MD)

    "The Center for Musical Theatre Arts is unique in its approach to children's theatre. The Center brings together children of various ages to work cooperatively in the production of an original one-act musical comedy. From auditions to final performance, students will participate in the complete process of producing a play. Students will learn team-building skills as we build an acting ensemble and prepare for a performance. Students will participate in auditioning (acting, singing and dancing), be cast in a role, and rehearse for performance of an original one-act musical comedy.     The Youth Chorale

    The Youth Chorale has over 100 young people in three choirs: a training choir, a treble chorus, and a mixed chorus of soprano, alto, tenor and bass made up of the most experienced young men and women through high school.

    Math and Music - Cleveland Institute of Music

    Math and Music is an exciting example of project-based learning for students in grades 6-8. In a series of two videoconferences, students become the producers of a major musical event. Participants must utilize problem-solving skills relating to fractions, decimals, proportions, algebra and spatial geometry. $350 for entire unit (2 videoconferences).
