HERO Youth Ambassadors - United Nations Association of the United State of America (UNA - USA)

UNA - USA presents an annual Youth Ambassador Program. Current juniors or seniors in high school or freshmen in college can apply to work in HERO-sponsered schools in both South Africa and Nambia during the summer. Twenty teens will be selected for this opportunity to make a difference!

National Women's Hall of Fame (Seneca Falls, NY)

In 1969, a group of women and men of Seneca Falls created the National Women's Hall of Fame, believing that the contribution of American women deserved a permanent home in the small village where it all began. This Phoenix-based science center is one of the most interactive facilities in the country. Childrens' programs include a series of science camps (ages 6-11), computer classes and more. Junior Scholars Program - Miami University

The Junior Scholars Program is much more than academic studies. "In addition to course work, Scholars attend a series of seminars on topics such as time management and study skills, college admissions, financial aid, interpersonal relationships, cultural awareness, and alcohol awareness. A full schedule of social and recreational activities complements the scholarly parts of the Program. Students and staff participate in swimming, ice-skating, broomball, and volleyball; and they enjoy use of Miami University's Recreational Sports Center. A popular outing every year is the excursion to Kings Island. Scholars also enjoy picnics, movies, parents' weekend, and faculty appreciation dinner. The Scholars usually organize a hall government that plans several all-hall events, including a dance and a memory book."

Michigan State University - Explore Africa

This Michigan State University (MSU) Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program is a residential week-long summer program that gives students in grades 10 and 11 the opportunity to study the arts and cultural expressions of Africa through team research projects, daily language classes in Swahili and seminar discussions with African graduate students in the humanities and social sciences. The program is held in July at MSU and limited financial aid is available, based on financial need.

Aspen Music Festival and School

Since 1949, the world's most accomplished and promising musicians have made a pilgrimage to Aspen. They come not only to perform, but to teach, learn and be renewed. Discovery Cove

Discovery Cove is for the entire family, featuring once-in-a-lifetime, up-close and one-on-one encounters with dolphins and other exotic marine animals. You can have a good time with the animals like Dolphins, Stingrays (With stingers removed), and Tropical Fish. There also are great stuff to see like Birds, Sharks, and Barracudas. The Traveling School (Bozeman, MT)

The Traveling School is a semester-long program for girls aged 15-18 who wish to enhance their traditional academic experience with an overseas adventure. This non-profit is dedicated to the values of building self-esteem, increasing tolerance, creating cultural awareness, and encouraging academic exploration. Students earn full academic credit for seven semester courses in math, history, science, language arts, foreign language, PE, and global studies. The innovative and interesting curriculum takes full advantage of the environment and the culture overseas. Cass Railroad

An old (1901) lumber camp with its steam locomotive have been converted into a state park. The buildings and log flumes have been restored. You board the steam engine at the bottom of the mountain, ride up to the town, and explore at your leisure. It is great for train lovers, history lovers, and nature buffs as well.

Fernbank Museum of Natural History (GA)

The Fernbank Museum of Natural History is located in Atlanta, Georgia and grew out of a forest and the dream of Emily Harrison, a young girl who loved it. Growing up in the late 1800s, Emily often played in the forest surrounding her home just east of Atlanta. Emily was a naturalist and thrived on learning about the plants and animals around her. The 160,000 square foot museum, the only natural history museum in the world located in a natural environment, opened in 1992. In 2001 Fernbank became the first museum in the world to display the world's largest dinosaur, Argentinosaurus. This gargantuan sauropod is now a permanent feature in the Museum's 86-foot tall atrium along with the world's largest carnivorous dinosaur, Giganotosaurus, a flock of pterosaurs and a variety of other contemporaneous species in the Museum's newest permanent exhibition, Giants of the Mesozoic.

Fiske Planetarium

There are interesting shows on astronomy, physics, and space science at the Fiske Planetarium. These are on a regular basis and are appropriate for children of all ages. "The planetarium environment has a unique "surround" environment provided by no other medium. It immerses the audience in a three-dimensional dome that is capable of reproducing the night sky at any place on Earth and any time in history."

Gettysburg National Military Park

"This was the site of the largest Civil War battle ever waged in the Western Hemisphere. The Battle of Gettysburg opened on July 1, 1863 and closed two days later with the climactic "Pickett's charge". Historians have referred to the Battle of Gettysburg as the "High Water Mark of the Confederacy." It was the last major effort by Lee to take the fighting out of Virginia and into northern states. The Soldiers' National Cemetery at Gettysburg contains more than 7,000 interments including over 3,500 from the Civil War. It was here that President Abraham Lincoln delivered his immortal Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863. On February 11, 1895, congressional legislation was signed to establish Gettysburg National Military Park as a memorial dedicated to the armies that fought that great three day battle. Gettysburg National Military Park incorporates nearly 6,000 acres, with 26 miles of park roads and over 1,400 monuments, markers, and memorials."

Green River Preserve

The Green River Preserve is a magnificent 3,400 acre wildlife preserve in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Protected by the Schenck family for two generations, it is one of the finest private wildlife preserves in Western N.C. The Preserve is also a coed summer camp designed especially for rising 4th through 9th grade bright young naturalists.

West Virginia Trails

This sight provides information on many of the old coal train routes restored by West Viginia. They wind through beautiful untouched wilderness. Some of the trails have tunnels in them... and none of the grades are really steep because they were made to accommodate trains. The one in Morgantown runs along the Monogahelia river and through the downtown. There are bicycle and kayak rentals here. It is a great family outing.

Winterthur Museum, Enchanted Woods

It's a dupont estate and they have created an enchanted woods section with materials found throughout the grounds. For instance, a stone cottage with one wall missing has become a fairy house, a hollow tree trunk is a slide. There is a stone labryinth, "story stones" which resembles a miniatrue stonehenge, a fairy ring, and so much more. A delightful escape from playgrounds for the creative child!
