Academic Decathlon

The Academic Decathlon is a 10-event scholastic competition for teams of high school students. Each high school enters a team of nine students: 3 "A" or Honor students, 3 "B" or Scholastic students, and 3 "C" or Varsity students.

Academic Triathlon

U.S. Academic Triathlon is a five-person challenge for students grades 5 through 12. The Triathlon rewards strong performance in the areas of general intellect; specific academic abilities; leadership and psycho-social dynamics; visual and performing arts; and creative/productive thinking.

American Regions Math League

This is an annual national mathematics competition. High school students form teams of 15 to represent their city, state, county or school and compete against the best students from the United States and Canada. The event consists of Team, Power, Individual and Relay rounds and usually takes place the first Saturday after Memorial Day. Currently, ARML is held simultaneously at three sites: Penn State, The University of Iowa and The University of Nevada - Las Vegas. The ARML Power Contest is open to classes of high school students and consists of several "long answer" problems to which the class submits a single solution written during a 45 minute period.

FIRST - Robotics Competition

FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) is a multinational non-profit organization that sponsors this competition, which teams professional and high school students to solve engineering problems. Get a hands-on, inside look at the engineering profession by designing, assembling and testing a robot.

Grand Challenge Stories: Extraordinary Stories Award

Planet Earth is faced with a set of Grand Challenges whose solutions are critical to humanity over the next decades. To be responsible stewards of the planet and to ensure human progress, we must find sustainable solutions for alternative energy, safeguarding our environment, improving healthcare, advancing knowledge, and creating the technologies that enhance the way we live. Five nominated individuals or teams will split a $15,000 prize. In addition, a professional video of each of the five winning projects, including new interviews and footage filmed during March and/or April, will be produced and featured at the April summit in Boston; and travel support will be provided to bring the winners to the Boston summit.

Let's Get Real!

This is a competitive problem-solving program where students in teams of 2 to 6 work with corporate sponsors to find solutions for every day business challenges. Students in 6th through 12th grade at any school are eligible, and they can form teams that are not affiliated with a school. In other words, students home schooling, Scouts, neighborhood friends, etc. can form teams with an adult coordinator. There is no entry fee for teams. LifeSmarts.org

LifeSmarts is a fun program, run by the National Consumers League, that encourages high school students to learn about the consumer issues they face today and the new challenges that are right around the corner!

Math Kangaroo in USA

Math Kangaroo is a popular international not-selective competition in mathematics for students in grades 1 through 12. The competition takes the form of a multiple choice test. Each participant is seen as a winner and receives recognition and gifts on test day.

The Rhodes Scholars

Rhodes Scholars are elected for two years of study at the University of Oxford, with the possibility of renewal for a third year. All educational costs, such as matriculation, tuition, laboratory and certain other fees, are paid on the Scholar's behalf by the Rhodes Trustees. Each Scholar receives in addition a maintenance allowance adequate to meet necessary expenses for term-time and vacations. The Rhodes Trustees cover the necessary costs of travel to and from Oxford, and upon application, may approve additional grants for research purposes or study-related travel.

The Thiel Foundation

This organization allows students under the age of 20 to pursue innovative scientific and technical projects, learn entrepreneurship, and begin to build the technology companies of tomorrow. During their two-year tenure, each Fellow will receive $100,000 from the Thiel Foundation as well as mentorship from the Foundation’s network of tech entrepreneurs and innovators.

iMentor's mission is to improve the lives of young people from underserved communities in New York City through innovative, technology-based approaches to youth mentoring and education. They work with schools, after-school programs, community technology centers, and other youth development agencies that serve young people from low-income neighborhoods.

Ingenuity Project - Baltimore Polytechnic Institute (Baltimore, MD)

The mission of the Ingenuity Project is to prepare highly capable and motivated Baltimore students to achieve at nationally competitive levels in mathematics and science. The goal is to give city students the classroom advantages that wealthier county and private schools offer their populations with the expectation that Ingenuity students will take advanced placement courses in high school, attend college, and ultimately be prepared to become leaders in their chosen professions.

Michigan Math Circle (Ann Arbor, MI)

The Michigan Math Circle welcomes high school and middle school students to the Michigan Ann Arbor campus on Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 8 for lectures on and discussions about mathematics.

Orange County Math Circle (CA)

Carnegie Science Center - Girls Math and Science Partnership (GMSP)

The Girls, Math & Science Partnership (GMSP) was created to address issues regarding girls, their participation in science, and the expansion of their opportunities in and influence on the science and technology workforce. Working with girls ages 11-17, their teachers, parents, and mentors, GMSP draws organizations, stakeholders, and communities together in an effort to ensure that girls succeed in math and science.

NASA Virtual Skies

Explore the exciting worlds of aviation technology and air traffic management. In each of the six content Modules students will acquire and employ decision-making and collaborative skills while applying principles of algebra, geometry and calculus. Each section includes on-line activities complemented by downloadable print materials (PDF files) that can be used in the classroom to supplement the geography, mathematics and science concepts.

National Conference of Governor's Schools (NCoGS)

The National Conference of Governor's Schools, Inc. was launched in October 1987 at the first national assembly of governor's schools' leaders and board members. The number of states that operate summer residential governor's school programs fluctuates as programs gain and lose legislative funding. Governor's school programs are funded, in part or in full, by state legislatures and/or governor's offices. As a result, governor's schools are available exclusively to residents of the funding state or commonwealth.

The Congressional Award

The Congressional Award is the U.S. Congress' award for young Americans. It is non-partisan, voluntary, and non-competitive. The program is open to all 14- to 23-year-olds. Participants earn Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Certificates and Bronze, Silver and Gold Congressional Award Medals. Each level involves setting goals in four program areas: Volunteer Public Service, Personal Development, Physical Fitness, and Expedition/Exploration.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS)

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) selects 1,000 talented students to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. They provide Gates Millennium Scholars with personal and professional development through leadership programs along with academic support throughout their college career.

U.S. Performing Arts Camps

U.S. Performing Arts Camps are intensive conservatory-style summer camps designed for middle and high school students between the ages of 11-18. The camps are located at some of the finest universities in the country and many of these theater, dance, film and television departments direct the programs themselves. The camps offer the opportunity to experience campus life while interacting with professors and professionals. Exposure to a campus setting adds a stimulating, cultural dimension to a camper's experience, and provides a secure, safe environment.

Delaware Governor's School for Excellence (DE)

This school offers a one-week summer program bringing together academically and artistically talented sophomores from Delaware high schools. Students live in residence halls on the Newark campus and attend either the academic program (e.g., discussions, lectures, films) or the visual and performing arts program (e.g., tutorial instruction, performances). Student participants must have completed 10th grade. University faculty participate as instructors.

Missouri Bright Flight Scholarships (MO)

This merit-based program provides an annual scholarship award of $2,000 to top-ranked high school seniors to attend approved Missouri postsecondary schools. Home-schooled students or those who have obtained a certificate of high school equivalence by passing the General Educational Development (GED) examination are eligible for consideration.

North Carolina Academic Scholars Program (NC)

North Carolina Academic Scholars Program is designed for students in grades 9-12. Students who complete the requirements for an academically challenging high school program are named North Carolina Academic Scholars and will be designated by the State Board of Education as North Carolina Academic Scholars, will receive a seal of recognition attached to their diplomas, may receive special recognition at graduation exercises and other community events, may be considered for scholarships from the local and state business/industrial community and may use this special recognition in applying to post-secondary institutions.

One of the predominant service delivery options for secondary gifted students in America's high schools for the past two decades has been the Advanced Placement (AP) program. Written by Elisaa F. Academic Challenge Program (Multiple Locations, DE)

The Academic Challenge Program is a college-school partnership between the nine Sussex County School Districts and the Owens Campus of Delaware Tech. The students range from eighth graders to high school seniors, and the five-year program offers the standard high school curriculum in mathematics and English at an accelerated pace allowing for college course work during the junior and senior years. The college courses are provided at the Owens Campus through the Delaware Tech/University of Delaware Parallel Program. It is possible to earn 12 college credits in English and 15 college credits in mathematics.

Advanced Academy at University of West Georgia (Carrollton, GA)

The Advanced Academy at the University of Georgia is a program at the State University of West Georgia that provides a bridge for an early transition to college for gifted students. Students can combine the last two years of high school with the first two years of college, and earn concurrent credit. The curriculum can be chosen from any academic area, and guidance counselors assist students in their choices. Academy students live in a separate professionally staffed hall with rules that are consistent with the needs of younger students. The program provides many activities, such as after-class programs and seminars, fine arts activities, and intramurals. The web site provides information about the application process, admittance requirements, and fees.

Agnus Dei Junior Online Program

This distance learning program uses interactive, Web-based technologies to engage students and provide a "classical Christian education." All courses are taught with acute awareness of the responsibility of parents as the primary educator of the student.

Ann L. Burton Pre-Collegiate Scholarship Program - Wesley College

The Ann L. Burton Pre-Collegiate Scholarship program allows qualified high school juniors and seniors to earn up to 12 college credits tuition free, paying only the cost of their books and a $20 registration fee. Eligible students may take one, three-credit, course per semester during their junior and/or senior year.

Bard College at Simon's Rock (Great Barrington, MA)

This is the nation's only college of liberal arts and sciences designed for high school-age students. Most students enter Simon's Rock after completing the 10th or 11th grade, and follow programs leading to the Associate in Arts and Bachelor of Arts degrees in liberal arts. Also available from Simon's Rock: Acceleration to Excellence Program offering merit based scholarships; and, Summer Young Writers Workshop offering summer writing classes.

Bard High School Early College (New York, NY)

This alternative to the traditional high school is founded on the belief that many young people are ready and eager to do serious college work at age 16. It enables highly motivated students to move in four years from ninth grade through the first two years of college, earning the associate of arts (A.A.) degree as well as a high school diploma.

Boston University Academy (Boston, MA)

The mission of Boston University Academy is to educate talented students who are passionate about learning and who share the joy of inquiry. Engaging with dedicated teachers in a small and caring community, students first immerse themselves in a classically based curriculum and then continue their intellectual interests at Boston University, a major research university.

Brigham Young University (BYU) - Independent Study (Provo, UT)

This is a distance education program offering more than 500 university, high school, junior high school and personal enrichment courses to people throughout the world. BYU is accredited as an institution by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). Courses can be taken through a paper/pencil version or an online version. The student studies the materials, submits lessons, takes a final exam with a proctor or at a testing center, and receives a course grade that can be transferred to the school of their choice.

California State University, Accelerated College Experience (Sacramento, CA)

Accelerated College Enterance (ACE) is a program by Cal State which encourages qualified high school students to enroll in university classes while completing regular school studies. Credits earned through this program may be applied to degree programs. High School students have the opportunity to study subject matter which may not otherwise be available to them. Students must maintain good academic standing with both the university and their high school. CSU also offers an Academic Talent Search Program which provides alternative education to highly able and motivated students in grades 6 through 9.

DigiPen Institute of Technology - My ProjectFUN Youth Workshops, Tech Academies & Online Clubs (Redmond, WA)

DigiPen Institute of Technology's ProjectFUN Programs are committed to presenting a high quality education by engaging and challenging students in grades 5 and higher through hands-on learning. The ProjectFUN workshops engage middle and high school students in the arts and sciences by immersing them in the tools and techniques of today's high-tech careers. The workshops in Animation, Game Design, Video Game Programming, Multimedia Production, and Robotics enhance students' critical thinking skills, improve their knowledge of core subjects like math and physics, and excite their interest in the academic concepts underlying modern technology. Each workshop session is two weeks in length, with four consecutive sessions to choose from throughout the summer.

Early Experience Program - University of Denver (CO)

This program is designed for students in grades 10-12 of exceptional maturity and academic ability. Eligible students take regular University of Denver courses for undergraduate college credit. The program is offered during the regular school year and summer quarter. The cost is 50 percent of the normal tuition per credit hour.

Elgin Community College - Early enrollment (Elgin, IL)

Located in Elgin, Illinois, the Elgin Community College allows high school students ages 16 and up to enroll in six credit hours/semester with permission from their high school principal or guidance counselor. Students under 16 also may enroll if they are in a gifted or accelerated program and have permission from their school officials and the Associate Dean. The college also offers dual enrollment programs and accelerated college enrollment.

Emory University - Joint Enrollment (Atlanta, GA)

High school juniors in the Atlanta area can take college courses at Emory while enrolled in high school. Students usually have completed the junior year in their secondary school and must follow the same admission procedures as candidates for regular college admission.

EPGY English Department (Palo Alto, CA)

This distance learning program through EPGY offers English courses from the fourth-grade level through the Advanced Placement level. Students are placed into English Expository Writing courses based on age and standardized test scores.

EPGY Online High School (EPGY OHS)

This new, independent online high school, offered through Stanford University’s Education Program for Gifted Youth (EPGY), is a three-year, fully-accredited, diploma-granting program opening April 2006; it is designed for gifted students in 10th through 12th grade.

Gifted & Talented Education (GATE), The Honors College at Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI)

The various Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programs offered through Michigan State University (MSU) are dedicated to promoting differentiated educational programs for students in grades 7-12. Mathematics Science and Technology (MST) is a two-week residential program for academically talented students. CHAMP is a regional program for students highly gifted in mathematics. ISHALL is an accelerated, intensive two-year course in literature and language designed to meet the curricular goals and merit standards of high school English, grades 7-10, in two years. Plus, there is also a dual enrollment program, a Michigan-Shiga Exchange program, a CSI Forensic Science program and several others listed on the website.

Hunter College Elementary School (New York, NY)

Located on 94th Street between Park and Madison Avenues, Hunter College Campus Schools offer an elementary school for children from kindergarten to sixth grade and a high school from seventh to twelfh grade. The school is publicly funded and committed to serving a gifted student body. Students are taught to think critically and creatively. The curriculum emphasizes mastery of the arts and sciences. During the fourth through sixth grades teachers provide opportunities for students to explore topics in-depth. In addition to the material taught by homeroom teachers, children study areas known as "specials", which are taught by a specialist in the fields of foreign language, music, cultural arts, mathematics and others. Each year, 48 students are enrolled in the kindergarten program.

Hunter College High School (New York, NY)

Hunter College High School is a public coeducational day school for intellectually gifted students in grades 7-12, located in New York City. Students here experience an enriched and accelerated liberal arts program within a rigorous and collaborative learning community. The school is supported and maintained by the City University of New York. Students are admitted on a basis of an entrance exam given in January of their sixth grade year. Students must be recommended by their elementary school principal to sit for the exam. The school promotes respect for scholarship, leadership, and service (all students must complete a minimum number of hours of community service before graduation).

Independent High School Program - University of Nebraska (Lincoln, NE)

This distance learning program through the University of Nebraska, Lincoln serves homeschool organizations and students who wish to be fully accredited wtih a high school diplomia while completing independent study. Students can complete a 4-year high school diploma with the curriculum available or can use the offered courses to supplement their current curriculum.

Indiana Academy Distance Learning Program - Ball State University (Muncie, IN)

The Indiana Academy for Science, Mathematics, and Humanities' Office of Outreach Programs extends the institute's mission to other schools and students throughout the state using the most economical and effective technologies available. This also allows us to serve students around the globe who are in need of advanced courses. Through these various Outreach programs, the Indiana Academy strives to stimulate and enable vitality in educational programs for academically gifted students and teachers.

Indiana University South Bend - Distance Learning (South Bend, IN)

Indiana University South Bend offers high school students the chance to explore the campus in two ways: taking college classes while still in high school or becoming an IU South Bend student. A "to-do" calendar is also provided on the admissions page for students to refer to during their senior year of high school.

Joint Enrollment Program for High School Students at Georgia Tech (Savannah, GA)

Georgia Tech offers a plan of concurrent enrollment to high school students. Students are jointly enrolled at their high school and Tech as special undergraduate students under an agreement that enables the student to be awarded their high school diploma, as well as receive college credit. Students admitted into the program may register for a maximum of 8 semester hours in courses that are NOT available at the high school level. The Joint Enrollment program is an opportunity to enrich, but not replace, the high school experience for students who have completed the highest level of coursework available in high school. High school students that wish to enter Tech full-time will be considered through the early admission program.

Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Sciences (KAMS) - Ft. Hays State University (Hays, KS)

Established by legislative action in 2006, the Kansas Academy of Mathematics and Science (KAMS) plans to be the state’s premier academic high school program for the best and brightest high school students. Based in part after successful programs in Missouri and Texas, KAMS is a unique residential learning experience that provides exceptional high school juniors and seniors a potent blend of college-level instruction by Ph.D. faculty; a high school diploma and 68 hours of college credit; and, the option to receive an associate’s degree upon graduation.

Kids on Campus – Schoolcraft College (Livonia, MI)

Schoolcraft College offers a Kids on Campus program that offers a large variety of exciting educational programs for children grades 1st - 12th. Classes are offered during the fall, winter, and summer semesters at times convenient for children and parents.

Lansing Community College Dual Enrollment Program (Lansing, MI)

Michigan high school juniors and seniors earn dual credit at Lansing Community College in Michigan through this program. Dual enrollment provides students with enrichment and depth in subjects of their interest that they may not be able to find in their regular high school curriculum.

Matteo Ricci College (MRC) - Early College (Seattle, WA)

Matteo Ricci College (MRC) located at Seattle University (SU) in Washington, integrates high school and university-level curriculum, allowing students to complete high school and college in six or seven years, rather than the traditional eight years. The curriculum is designed jointly by the student's high school and MRC/SU and is a traditional interdisciplinary curriculum. Upon completion of the program, students receive a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities. This program is open to local high schools students.

Michigan State University (MSU) - Dual Enrollment (East Lansing, MI)

Michigan State University (MSU) offers Dual Enrollment for students in grades 11 and 12 through Gifted and Talented Education (GATE). Students can enroll in at least one MSU course while taking at least one high school course in the Dual Enrollment Program. This differentiated curriculum offers challenges and learning opportunities that meet the needs of students at various skill levels. Tuition costs are covered by the student's high school district, and the student is only responsible for the cost of transportation, books and parking.

MIT Educational Studies Program (ESP) (Cambridge, MA)

The MIT Educational Studies Program (ESP) was created by MIT students in 1957 to make a difference in the community by sharing knowledge and creativity with local high school students. Since then, the program has grown to support more than 3,000 students each year. The original High School Studies Program (HSSP) has been joined by many other enrichment programs, and the agenda changes each year to best suit the community’s needs.

Montclair State University Gifted And Talented Program (Montclair, NJ)

Montclair State University’s Academically Gifted and Talented Youth Program provides accelerated, inquiry based courses designed to meet the unique intellectual and social needs of high ability students. Gifted students in grades 1-11 have an opportunity to enroll in fall and spring weekend courses as well as a six week summer camp. Kindergarten students are eligible for spring semester. Students in grades 11 and 12 may enroll in college courses as part of our High Jump Program.

Oklahoma City Community College - Concurrent Enrollment (Oklahoma City, OK)

If you are a high school junior or senior who is "on track" with your graduation requirements and ready for the challenge of a college classroom - concurrent enrollment is for you. You can get a jump start on your college education by earning early college credit. These credits transfer to other colleges and universities through the concurrent enrollment program.

Pacific Union College - Early College (Angwin, CA)

This college in Angwin, CA, allows students who have completed two years of high school and passed their California High School Proficiency Exam to apply for admission by advanced enrollment. Students are required to have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5, provide recommendations and go through an interview. Students who are looking for more academically challenging work benefit from this early college program.

Postsecondary Enrollment Program with Minnesota Higher Education (Multiple Locations, MN)

The Post-Secondary Enrollment Options (PSEO) program in Minnesota allows high school juniors and seniors to take courses, full- or part-time, at a post-secondary institutions for high school credit. PSEO provides students with a greater variety of class offerings and the opportunity to pursue more challenging coursework than may be available at their high schools. Tuition, fees and required textbooks are at no cost to students. The program is administered through the Minnesota Department of Education.

Program for the Exceptionally Gifted (PEG) - Mary Baldwin College (Staunton, VA)

Located in Stauton, Virginia on the campus of Mary Baldwin College, this unique all-girl school offers an opportunity for bright and accomplished young women to complete college during their high school years while living in a fully supervised residence hall. Prospective students can apply from their eighth-grade year and on. Students are accepted based on giftedness, consistent academic achievement and personal maturity.

Russell Sage College - Early College Program (Troy, NY)

Located in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy tri-city area, this college is exclusively for women providing students the opportunity to combine undergraduate and graduate study in accelerated bachelor's/master's degree sequences. Launched in Fall 2003 for talented high school juniors considering college enrollment instead of their senior year, the program also serves homeschooled students who may be advanced in their study and ready to move on to college regardless of their age.

Scottsdale Community College - Early Outreach Programs (Scottsdale, AZ)

Scottsdale Community College is committed to offering high quality, affordable education. SCC offers two year degree programs in many disciplines as well as university transfer programs and special interest courses. The purpose of the Early Outreach Programs Department is to provide assistance and facilitate the underage students' experience as they start their educational journey at SCC. The Gifted Math Program is an enrichment program for students in grades 7-12 at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Students commute to the university twice weekly to study an enriched and accelerated program of mathematics in grades 7 – 10, and university level courses in discrete mathematics and calculus in grades 11 and 12. They can accumulate a total of 22 semester hours of university credit for successful participation.

Texas Academy of Leadership in the Humanities - Lamar University (Beaumont, TX)

University of Sourthern California, The Resident Honors Program (RHP) (Los Angeles, CA)

This program accepts high school students who have the social and emotional maturity to function independently as college freshmen, and who want to trade their senior year of high school for their freshman year of college. Interested students should have a record of success in high school, such as honors and AP or IB courses, summer programs and special talents in music, cinema, or the performing arts. Virginia's Community College - Dual Enrollment/Dual Credit (Multiple Locations, VA)

The Virginia Community College system and a collaboration of public high schools offer dual enrollment and dual credit programs. The dual enrollment program allows students to take college courses for free from their high school campus via various technologies and classroom instructions. In addtition, there is also "dual enrollement" for high school students who want to participate in college courses during the summer or the school year.

West Virginia University ACCESS program (Morgantown, WV)

Advanced high school students may enroll in West Virginia University (WVU) courses through the ACCESS program. Credit for courses will be recorded on an official WVU transcript. This college credit applies to a student's academic progress at WVU or may be transferred to other institutions of higher education. Whether these credits count toward high school graduation is a decision of the Board of Education of the county in which the student resides.

Western Iowa Tech Community College (Sioux City, IA)

This Sioux City, Iowa school offers over 70 liberal arts and technical programs, including courses in fields such as Auto Collision Repair Technology, Pre-Dental Hygiene and Biotechnology. Choice 2000 On-Line School

This online school is one of the original charter schools in California. It is a fully accredited secondary school, covering grades 7-12. As a public school, it is free for students living in Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, and Orange counties. Choice 2000 is a completely on-line school. The instructional platform utilized by Choice is interactive. Students attend classes daily at set times. Lessons are presented both visually and verbally. Students and teachers are able to interact directly in this virtual environment, hearing and answering questions and participating in discussions of what appears on the screen. En Famille

This non-profit organization was established in France in 1978. It arranges long-term language immersion exchanges for students ages 9-16. American students are paired with a student of their own age in France, Spain, or Germany. After the two are matched, they spend a year together: six months in their own country, with their own family, and six months with their exchange partner’s family. Teens 14 and up can participate for a period of as short as three months.

Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science (IMACS) - (Plantation, FL)

IMACS is designed to give children a competitive edge by teaching them how to think critically using logic and reasoning. Headquartered in Plantation, Florida, IMACS offers after-school and weekend classes for gifted and talented 1st-12th grade students in math enrichment, computer programming and virtual robotics, electronics, university-level mathematics, and university-level computer science. In this school, the program of study is centered on the usual academic core subjects - English, social studies, world language, and mathematics. This Michigan State University Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program is available to students in Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, and Shiawassee Intermediate School Districts in Michigan. DeBakey High School for Health Professions (Houston, TX)

Designed in partnership with the Baylor College of Medicine as a rigorous four-year health professions magnet program, this school is designed to prepare students to go to top universities. A five year mathematics sequence and competitive AP program develops students with an essential academic foundation. The Academic Magnet High School is a gifted and talented high school with 10 students who have been designated as National Merit Semi Finalists, and 15 students who are commended. AMHS students have maintained the highest average SAT I scores among all four-year public high schools in the state. All juniors passed the new HSAP state exit exam in the spring of 2004. In addition, for the second year in a row AMHS has met ALL AYP standards.

This program for gifted high school students in Bellevue, Washington, was created to continue serving the needs of gifted students after elementary and middle school, where these students have access to the PRISM program. This is the first district program to address the needs of these students when they reach high school. Gifted high school students attend Interlake High School, a regular public high school. They will spend half of the day mixed in with the general school population, and half of the day specifically with GATE (Gifted and Talented Education) students in IB classes. Students complete the high school curriculum in 11th grade and for their senior year they can take seminars, participate in internships or take college courses.

Center for Talented Youth Summer Programs (CAA) (NY)

These three-week summer programs are held at colleges and universities across the nation. Students take only one course, as "this intense immersion in a subject has proven to be both challenging and stimulating for students of high ability." In addition to coursework, students enjoy sports, arts and crafts, music, and special events such as dances and a student talent show.

Georgetown University Summer College for High School Juniors (Washington, DC)

Summer College for High School Juniors at Georgetown University offers outstanding high school students the opportunity to expand their studies with college courses taken in an intensive, supportive college environment. Juniors live on campus, attend class with undergraduate Georgetown students, and are encouraged to take advantage of the many resources available in our nation's capital. Students in Summer College for High School Juniors enroll in one - two lower division undergraduate courses appropriate to their interests, background, and previous academic achievement. A typical full-time schedule for a five-week session is six credits. Outside class, students participate in programs planned by the counseling staff and learn about the importance of time management. Applicants should be rising seniors.

Global Scholar

Global Scholar is a two-week summer seminar that offers rising high school juniors and seniors the chance to immerse themselves in college- level coursework on world affairs. The seminar normally takes place each July, at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. At Global Scholar, students prepare for the academic rigor of America's leading universities and develop their leadership skills. They will raise their awareness of global issues through academic study, through face-to-face videoconferences with their peers around the world, through film and music and through interactive simulation experiences.

Virginia Governor's Mentorship for Marine Sciences (Richmond, VA)

The Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS) Governor's School is a five-week summer residential school provided in cooperation with Christopher Newport University. For 14 years, this program has been serving high achieving high school students throughout the state of Virginia and providing participants with exceptional, authentic experiences in marine research. Each summer, VIMS hosts six gifted/talented students who have demonstrated interest in and aptitude for marine science. The program is structured as an apprenticeship, and is administered concurrently with a similar program sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). These apprenticeships offer a broad variety of marine research experiences, and specific learner outcomes and achievements vary accordingly as each student works with a faculty sponsor on an authentic VIMS research project.

Tuition is about $3,000 per student and each applicant is required to take an admission exam.

This summer program provides gifted students (grades 7-10) the opportunity to learn challenging material at a rate suitable for their advanced abilites. Environmental Health Sciences Institute for Rural Youth (EHSI), (Iowa City, IA)

The Environmental Health Sciences Institute (EHSI) for Rural Youth was created in 1997 as an educational outreach activity. It is a full-scholarship, one-week residential experience for gifted Iowa 10th grade students from communities of less than 5,000 residents. The program was designed to expose these students to cutting-edge environmental health research at a time in their lives when they are making important decisions regarding their future studies and careers. Girls on Ice (North Cascades, WA)

If you are a 16-18 year old girl, love adventure and want to learn about science in the outdoors, this course is for you! Discover the world of glaciers on Mount Rainier, an active volcano with 35 square miles of snow and ice. Experienced mountaineers and a glaciologist will lead nine women on a research expedition to the Emmons Glacier. We'll backpack to a remote campsite, sleep beneath the stars, and investigate glaciers as forces of erosion and indicators of climate change. To navigate the glacier safely, you'll learn basic mountaineering skills, including how to rope-up and self-arrest. The course will begin and end at White River Campground near the park's northeast entrance. Tuition includes food, group camping and glacier travel equipment.

This Michigan State University (MSU) Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program is a residential week-long summer program that gives students in grades 10 and 11 the opportunity to study the arts and cultural expressions of Africa through team research projects, daily language classes in Swahili and seminar discussions with African graduate students in the humanities and social sciences. The program is held in July at MSU and limited financial aid is available, based on financial need.

Michigan State University (MSU) - High Achievers (East Lansing, MI)

Michigan State University (MSU) offers this Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) summer program for high school students who are interested in earning college credits over the summer. Tuition, textbooks and transportation are all the responsibility of the student. The program takes place in June and July for one month.

Missouri Scholars Academy - University of Missouri (Columbia, MO)

"The Missouri Scholars Academy is a three-week academic program for 330 of Missouri's gifted students who are ready to begin their junior year in high school. The Academy is a residential program held on the campus of the University of Missouri-Columbia."

North Dakota Governor's School in Science and Mathematics (Fargo, ND)

The North Dakota Governor's School in Science and Mathematics is a six-week summer residential program for sophomore and junior high school students who have special aptitude and interest in science or mathematics. The Governor's School is a concentrated and intensive academic program. Students focus on math or science activities for part of each day; they also attend classes to help develop their ability to think creatively and critically. In addition, there are organized recreational and fine arts activities in the evenings and on weekends.

Ohio State University - Engineering Summer Honors Institute for Gifted Students (Columbus, OH)

Exploring Engineering Through Robotics will provide gifted students the opportunity to be introduced to the fundamentals of engineering and immersed in a robotics experience that will serve as an exciting vehicle for the delivery of those fundamentals. The focus will be on robotics, introducing students to the various engineering disciplines and teach them engineering fundamentals. The Ohio Department of Education requires that participants must be Ohio Residents and must currently be in the 9th or 10th grade in an Ohio school district.

Presidential Pre-College Program - Southwest Missouri State University (Springfield, MO)

Robert E. University of Pennsylvania Precollege Summer Program (Philadelphia, PA)

Talented high school juniors and seniors learn what it takes to meet the challenges of college life in Penn's Pre-College program. Students are offered a wide range of regular undergraduate courses in the arts and sciences. With certain exceptions (lecture/lab courses, microeconomics and intensive Spanish), students are encouraged to take two classes. In addition to their coursework, students meet new people, participate in stimulating discussions, special events and workshops and experience living independently, maybe for the first time. The confidence they gain helps them enjoy their freshman year at college, rather than find themselves overwhelmed with new choices and responsibilities.

University of Pittsburgh Health Career Scholars Academy (Pittsburgh, PA)

The goal of the UPHCSA is to introduce students to the world of health care, including issues of primary care, prevention, public health, human growth and development, and areas of practice. Students will participate in hands-on learning, core courses, concentration courses, small discussion groups, simulations, team projects, presentations and multiple site visits. The living-learning experience will prepare students to be empathetic and culturally competent in their careers, understand what course of action is necessary for them to reach their goals, and incorporate what they learn into a medical profession.

Landmark Volunteers

LANDMARK VOLUNTEERS is a nonprofit summer community service organization for high school students fourteen and a half years of age or older, entering 10th, 11th or 12th grade. Students spend two weeks of summer volunteering. Volunteers serve in teams of up to fourteen students under the leadership and supervision of an adult team leader who is a paid member of the Landmark Volunteers staff. Volunteers engage primarily in manual labor.

This college is one of the only accredited colleges in the United States designed exclusively for students with dyslexia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD), or other specific learning disabilities. Satori Summer Camp is for students aged 12-18 located in Cheney, Washington. The Arkansas Governor's School is a six-week summer residential program for Arkansas gifted and talented students who have completed 11th grade. Governor's School of North Carolina (GSNC) (Raleigh, NC)

This prestigious Governor's School in North Carolina is open to rising seniors only, with exceptions made for rising juniors in the performing/visual arts area. For six weeks the state-funded program offers gifted teens a curriculum that explores "the most recent ideas and concepts" in a number of interdisciplinary areas. These areas include: English, foreign languages (Spanish at Governor's School West and French at Governor's School East), mathematics, and natural and social sciences. The performing/visual arts disciplines include art, choral and instrumental music, dance, and drama.

Minority Introduction to Engineering (MITE)

"The Minority Introduction to Engineering (MITE) program is a free, one week summer program. It is designed for minority high school students between their junior and senior year who are interested in the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA) and engineering. During MITE week, participants spend their days in classes performing engineering projects. Students rise early in the morning, exercise, and gain first hand experience on what it takes to be a cadet at the United States Coast Guard Academy (USCGA). All of this enables students to make an informed decision about applying to USCGA."

Southern Methodist University - College Experience Program (Dallas, TX)

Located in Dallas, SMU's College Experience is a five-week summer program that provides an opportunity for a small and carefully chosen group of highly motivated and academically able high school students to get a head start on college and a taste of campus life. Through participation in college credit courses, students entering the eleventh and twelfth grades can earn up to six credit hours which can be applied towards a bachelor's degree. Students live together in a campus residence facility, and cultural and recreational activities are arranged by resident advisors.

Stetson University, High Achieving Talented Students (HATS) (DeLand, FL)

High Achieving Talented Students (HATS) is a three-part program sponsored by Stetson University. In collaboration with the Belin-Blank International Center for Gifted Education and Talent Development at the University of Iowa, Stetson provides outstanding educational opportunities for high-achieving Florida students in grades 4-9. These opportunities include the HATS Summer Program, above-level testing through the Belin Blank Center's academic talent search and Stetson scholarships.

Summer Scholar Program - University of Miami (FL)

A "boot camp for your brain", the University of Miami's Summer Scholar Programs, established in 1991, are taught by University faculty members and present a unique opportunity for high school students who have completed their sophomore or junior year to earn college credit in specific areas of concentration. Students learn firsthand what college is like by living and studying on campus. Students also take laboratory classes and have the opportunity to learn about their particular interest by visiting local sites that are relevant to their fields of study.
