HERO Youth Ambassadors - United Nations Association of the United State of America (UNA - USA)

UNA - USA presents an annual Youth Ambassador Program. Current juniors or seniors in high school or freshmen in college can apply to work in HERO-sponsered schools in both South Africa and Nambia during the summer. Twenty teens will be selected for this opportunity to make a difference!

This website by the Institute for Mathematics and Computer Science is an online learning facility, dedicated to delivering the highest quality interactive mathematics and computer science curricula to talented secondary school and undergraduate students.

Marshall Scholarships

At least 40 American graduate students each year are awarded this two-year scholarship, which covers the cost of their education in the United Kingdom. Applicants must be United States citizens and have completed any four year undergraduate degree with at least a 3.7 GPA.

Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program (REU)

The National Science Foundation makes possible a number of opportunities for undergraduates to join research projects each summer. This allows students to experience first-hand how basic research is carried out, and to contribute consequentially. The principal support by NSF of such activities is through the Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program. REU "Sites" are established in all fields of science, mathematics, and engineering. Each Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates, who work in the research programs of the host institution. Students are in general accepted from throughout the country. Each student is assigned to a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty, post-docs, and graduate students. In addition, seminars, lunch meetings, and social functions are organized to facilitate interaction between the undergraduates. Students are granted stipends, and in some cases assistance with housing and travel.

Washington University in St. Louis (MO) - Academic Scholarship and Fellowship Programs

Washington University in St. Louis is committed to helping talented students who show exceptional academic performance and outstanding promise. The Academic Scholarship and Fellowship Programs offer financial assistance based solely on academic achievement. Scholarships and fellowships are awarded through special competitions. Recipients generally score in the top ranges on the SAT I’s or ACT’s. Most are in the top 10 percent of their classes in high school and have followed an extremely rigorous curriculum.

Duke University Undergraduate Scholars and Fellows Program (NC)

The Office of Undergraduate Scholars and Fellows was established in 1998 to provide a coordinated infrastructure for Duke University's premier undergraduate merit award programs. Scholars and fellows are selected from the top of the Duke undergraduate applicant pool; students do not apply directly for these particular merit awards. See specific programs for details.

The Center for Gifted Studies - Western Kentucky University (KY)

For 25 years, The Center for Gifted Studies has been offering all types of services and gifted child programs (Super Saturdays). Under the direction of Dr. Julia Link Roberts, the Board of Regents at Western Kentucky University created the center as a unit within the university. Minority scholarships are available for SCATS and VAMPY. As a leader in the field, this center is a strong source of information, as is The Challenge, their award winning newsletter.

The Halbert and Nancy Robinson Center for Young Scholars at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA)

The University of Washington is home to an internationally unique and renowned resource for gifted students, the Halbert and Nancy Robinson Center for Young Scholars. For more than 25 years, the Robinson Center has been the gateway through which some of the brightest young scholars in Washington State enter the UW and/or participate in academically accelerated summer courses. The Robinson Center focuses on the vital questions about how to optimize young people's development and inspire them to achieve personal and professional excellence, as well as contribute to their communities. In addition to its research and the courses taught by its faculty, the Center annually serves families and youth throughout the State of Washington through the following programs: the Washington Search for Young Scholars; Summer Challenge and Summer Stretch (for students in Grades 5-9); the Transition School/Early Entrance Program (for students no older than 14; and the UW Academy for Young Scholars (for students who enter the UW Honors Program after grade 10).

Bluefield State College is a public college located in Bluefield, West Virginia and offers high school students the opportunity to take courses as a special or nonmatriculated student.

California State University, Accelerated College Experience (Sacramento, CA)

Accelerated College Enterance (ACE) is a program by Cal State which encourages qualified high school students to enroll in university classes while completing regular school studies. Credits earned through this program may be applied to degree programs. High School students have the opportunity to study subject matter which may not otherwise be available to them. Students must maintain good academic standing with both the university and their high school. CSU also offers an Academic Talent Search Program which provides alternative education to highly able and motivated students in grades 6 through 9.

California State University, Early Entrance Program (EEP) (Los Angeles, CA)

Five-minutes from downtown L.A., this early entrance program allows outstanding young people to enter college as full-time students to pursue their baccalaureate degrees. Student from age 11 and up are accepted and have use of a suite of rooms on campus. All entering EEP students have a common schedule of curriculum. Additionally, EEP students are enrolled in the GE Honors Program, which provides select faculty and specially designed small classes with other University Honors students. Tuition costs are set by the regular fees charged by the University. The Washington Pre-College Test (WPCT, similar to the SAT I) is required to apply.

Carnegie Mellon - Open Learning Initiative (Pittsburgh, PA)

Open and free courses through Carnegie Mellon's Open Learning Initiative offers free access to various courses no charge. However, users do not receive credit and Carnegie Mellon does not provide any certification or verification of completion. Use the self-guiding materials and activities to learn at your own pace! Carnegie Mellon Institute for Talented Elementary Students (C-MITES) (Pittsburgh, PA)

The program consists of one day, three hour, Saturday or Sunday workshops throughout the Fall and Spring semesters for academically talented elementary students, primarily courses in science and mathematics, but also creative writing, computer, poetry, marketing, and literature. Child may attend up to four courses a semester. They also have Parent Information Sessions.

Center for Precollegiate Education and Training - University of Florida (UF-CPET) (Gainesville, FL)

This program promotes interaction between teachers, students, graduate students, researchers and industry stakeholders in science and technology education and training. Some programs include: Dual Credit Enrollment, Excursions in Science, Mini Medical School, Science Information for Teachers, Summer Science Institute and more.

College for Kids Program - St. Louis Community College (MO)

College for Kids offers a variety of courses including art, drama, math, science, rocketry, photography, history, logic, chess, personal development, and computer programming.

Community College of Vermont (VT)

Community College of Vermont students include those still in high school, traditional-college-age students, adults of all ages seeking degrees or skill enhancement, and "life-long learners" taking courses for enjoyment. We welcome them all, and our enrollment process is designed not to exclude any, but to help each begin at the appropriate level and be successful in their courses. For this reason, the college may restrict enrollment in a particular course if a student's assessment scores or transcript do not indicate readiness.

CU Online - University of Colorado

This distance learning program is offered by the University of Colorado. CU's catalog of online courses includes more than 200 core curriculum, elective and professional development courses in a wide range of disciplines as well as several online degree programs and certificates.

Early Experience Program - University of Denver (CO)

The Early Experience Program is designed for high school students with exceptional academic ability who wish to enrich or accelerate their education with university-level courses. The program is offered during the traditional school year and in the summer. Eligible students take regular University of Denver courses for college credit while still in high school. Participating students have taken courses in computer science, mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, biology, statistics, physics, accounting, engineering, art, foreign languages, history, psychology, music, sociology, literature, business, and political science. The program provides course selection advising and follow-up counseling. This is a commuter only program.

Elgin Community College: Early enrollment

Located in Elgin, Illinois, the Elgin Community College allows high school students ages 16 and up to enroll in six credit hours/semester with permission from their high school principal or guidance counselor. Students under 16 also may enroll if they are in a gifted or accelerated program and have permission from their school officials and the Associate Dean. The college also offers dual enrollment programs and accelerated college enrollment.

Emory University Joint Enrollment (Atlanta, GA)

High school juniors in the Atlanta area can take college courses at Emory while enrolled in high school. Students usually have completed the junior year in their secondary school and must follow the same admission procedures as candidates for regular college admission. The deadline to apply is June 15.

Harvard Extension School (Cambridge, MA)

Harvard Extension School offers 100 online courses and a unique blend of traditional liberal arts and professional studies programs. Classes are offered to students students with various backgrounds and academic experience. The course tuition is the “lowest in the Boston area.”

Hunter College Elementary School (New York, NY)

Located on 94th Street between Park and Madison Avenues, Hunter College Campus Schools offer an elementary school for children from kindergarten to sixth grade and a high school from seventh to twelfh grade. The school is publicly funded and committed to serving a gifted student body. Students are taught to think critically and creatively. The curriculum emphasizes mastery of the arts and sciences. During the fourth through sixth grades teachers provide opportunities for students to explore topics in-depth. In addition to the material taught by homeroom teachers, children study areas known as "specials", which are taught by a specialist in the fields of foreign language, music, cultural arts, mathematics and others. Each year, 48 students are enrolled in the kindergarten program.

Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore, MD)

Established in 1876, The Johns Hopkins University was the first research university in the United States. Their main goal is to advance students' knowledge through discovery and scholarship. Johns Hopkins ranks among the top U.S. universities in receipt of federal research and development funds.

Middlebury College (Middlebury, VT)

Middlebury College is a highly selective institute that offers four years to explore a liberal arts curriculum. The curriculum is diverse and interdisciplinary and offers opportunities to do research with faculty scientists, join a relief mission to a third-world country, hike the Long Trail, or play left wing on the hockey team.

Open Yale Courses - Yale University (New Haven, CT)

Open Yale Courses provides free and open access to a selection of introductory courses taught by distinguished teachers and scholars at Yale University. The aim of the project is to expand access to educational materials for all who wish to learn. All lectures were recorded in the Yale College classroom and are available in video, audio, and text transcript format. Registration is not required and no course credit is available.

Program for the Exceptionally Gifted (PEG) - Mary Baldwin College (VA)

Located in Stauton, Virginia, this unique all-girl school offers an opportunity for bright and accomplished young women to complete college during their high school years while living in a fully supervised residence hall. Located on the campus of Mary Baldwin College, which has been in existence for over 150 years, prospective students can apply from their eighth-grade year and on. Prospective PEG students are accepted based upon giftedness, consistent academic achievement and personal maturity.

Russell Sage College - Early College Program (Troy, NY)

Located in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy tri-city area, this college is exclusively for women providing students the opportunity to combine undergraduate and graduate study in accelerated bachelor's/master's degree sequences. Launched in Fall 2003 for talented high school juniors considering college enrollment instead of their senior year, the program also serves homeschooled students who may be advanced in their study and ready to move on to college regardless of their age.

Scottsdale Community College (Scottsdale, AZ)

Scottsdale Community College is committed to offering high quality, affordable education. SCC offers two year degree programs in many disciplines as well as university transfer programs and special interest courses.

Shepherd College - Early Admission (Shepherdstown, WV)

Shepherd College is a coed public four year college located in Sheperdstown, West Virginia that offers early admission for students who have completed three years of high school.

Shimer College (Chicago, IL) - Early Entrance

Gifted high school students can enter college early through the Early Entrant Program at Shimer College. Early entrants are automatically awarded a Robert Maynard Hutchins Scholarship in recognition of their academic potential.

Simon's Rock College of Bard (Great Barrington, MA)

This is the nation's only college of the liberal arts and sciences designed specifically for students of high school age. Most students enter Simon's Rock after completing the 10th or 11th grade, and follow programs leading to the Associate in Arts and Bachelor of Arts degrees in liberal arts.     The High School at Moorpark College (Moorpark, CA)

    Located near Los Angeles, this college offers a unique opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to have a non-traditional experience by enrolling in college level courses while taking high school required classes.

    Tunxis Community College (Farmington, CT)

    "The on-campus Early Childhood Center is staffed with qualified, experienced early childhood professionals and serves children three-to-five-years-old on a part- or full-time basis. The Center is among a select group accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), and is fully licensed by the State of Connecticut Department of Public Health. The Center is open to the children of students, staff and members of the community. The staff of this quality, developmentally-appropriate program believe that children learn through play, experiences, and meaningful interactions in a carefully planned environment. The goal of the staff is to encourage the social, emotional, physical, and cognitive development of children in a safe and nurturing environment."

    University of Florida (Gainesville, FL) - Dual Enrollment

    In the Center for Precollegiate Education and Training, high school students are provided the opportunity to enroll in classes at the University of Florida. They will receive both high school and college credit.

    University of Sourthern California, The Resident Honors Program (RHP) (Los Angeles, CA)

    This program accepts students who have the social and emotional maturity to function independently as college freshmen. Interested students should have a record of success in high school such as honors and AP or IB courses, summer programs, special talents in music, cinema, or the performing arts. The core curriculum is designed around small courses, which are taught by many of the University's faculty, and one-on-one tutorials.

    West Virginia University ACCESS program (Morgantown, WV)

    Advanced high school students may enroll in West Virginia University (WVU) courses through the ACCESS program. Credit for courses will be recorded on an official WVU transcript. This college credit applies to a student's academic progress at WVU or may be transferred to other institutions of higher education. Whether these credits count toward high school graduation is a decision of the Board of Education of the county in which the student resides. Satisfy the following criteria to be eligible for admission to WVU as an ACCESS participant:

  • High cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater on a 4.0 scale
  • Completion of the junior year of high school
  • Permission of parent or guardian
  • Permission of high school principal, vice principal or guidance counselor
  • Western Iowa Tech Community College (Sioux City, IA)

    This Sioux City, Iowa school offers over 70 liberal arts and technical programs, including courses in fields such as Auto Collision Repair Technology, Pre-Dental Hygiene and Biotechnology. Courses are also taught in conventional fields, such as English and Education. There are also options at WITCC for students under 16 who wish to pursue a higher education through specific classes.     Wichita State University (Wichita, KS)

    This public university in Kansas has allowed high school students to take a limited number of credits in conjunction with their high school studies but will not grant full admission without a high school diploma or GED.

    Cooperative Highly Accelerated Mathematics Program (CHAMP) (MI)

    This Michigan State University Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program is available to students in Clinton, Eaton, Ingham, and Shiawassee Intermediate School Districts in Michigan. Mathematically gifted students are able to complete the required four years of high school math in two years through CHAMP. Students meet on Thursday afternoons each week on the MSU campus.

    Georgia Academy of Mathematics, Engineering, and Science (GAMES), (Cochran, GA)

    GAMES is an accelerated prorgram for juniors and seniors on the Middle Georgia College campus in Cochran, Georgia. The program gives students the opportunity to spend their last two years of high school at Middle Georgia College, during which they will earn their high school diploma AND their Associate Degree in fields of math or science. Rising high school juniors and seniors are elgible for the program as long as they meet the stringent admission criteria.

    University of Minnesota Talented Youth Mathematics Program (UMTYMP)

    UMTYMP provides a challenging alternative to grade 8-12 mathematics coursework for Minnesota's talented mathematics students in grades 5-12. The highly accelerated courses are specially designed to provide these students with an intense academic environment that will stimulate their mathematical interest and abilities.

    Brigham Young University (BYU), (Provo, UT) - Independent Study

    This is a distance education program offering more than 500 university, high school, junior high school and personal enrichment courses to people throughout the world. BYU is accredited as an institution by the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities (NWCCU). Courses can be taken through a paper/pencil version or an online version. The student studies the materials, submits lessons, takes a final exam with a proctor or at a testing center, and receives a course grade that can be transferred to the school of their choice.

    DigiPen Institute of Technology (Redmond, WA)

    DigiPen Institute of Technology is a private coed college located in Redmond, WA. Authorized by the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board and institutionally accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology, DigiPen is the first school dedicated to preparing both computer animation and programming students for careers in the computer and video game industries. DigiPen offers a four-year Bachelor of Fine Arts in Production Animation and a Master of Science in Computer Science designed for those with a bachelors degree in related fields seeking advanced academic preparation and research in real time interactive simulation.

    Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programs promote differentiated educational programs for students in grade school, middle school and high school.

    Indiana Academy Distance Learning Program - Ball State University (Muncie, IN)

    This distance learning program is an offering of the Indiana Academy at Ball State University. The academy is a residential program for Indiana residents that accepts gifted high school juniors and seniors. However, the distance learning component does not seem to be restricted to state residents. Courses are year-long AP classes in a wide variety of subjects. Some courses are eligible for dual credit with a participating college. All classes are offered in a variety of interactive formats.

    Indiana University South Bend (South Bend, IN)

    Indiana University South Bend offers high school students the chance to explore the campus in two ways: taking college classes while still in high school or becoming an IU South Bend student. A "to-do" calendar is also provided on the admissions page for students to refer to during their senior year of high school.

    Kids on Campus – Schoolcraft College (Livonia, MI)

    Schoolcraft College offers a Kids on Campus program that offers a large variety of exciting educational programs for children grades 1st - 12th. Classes are offered during the fall, winter, and summer semesters at times convenient for children and parents.

    Lansing Community College Dual Enrollment Program (MI)

    Michigan high school juniors and seniors earn dual credit at Lansing Community College in Michigan through this program. Dual enrollment provides students with enrichment and depth in subjects of their interest that they may not be able to find in their regular high school curriculum.

    Matteo Ricci College (MRC), (Seattle, WA) - Early College

    Matteo Ricci College (MRC) located at Seattle University (SU) in Washington, integrates high school and university level curriculum, and allows students to complete high school and college in 6 or 7 years, rather than the traditional eight years. The curriculum is designed jointly by the student's high school and MRC/SU and is a traditional interdisciplinary curriculum. Upon completion of the program, students receive a Bachelor of Arts in Humanities. This program is open to local high schools students.

    Michigan State University (MSU) (East Lansing, MI)

    MSU offers Dual Enrollment for students in grades 11 and 12 through Gifted and Talented Education (GATE).     The Gifted Math Program is an enrichment program for students in grades 7-12 at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Students commute to the university twice weekly to study an enriched and accelerated program of mathematics in grades 7 – 10, and university level courses in discrete mathematics and calculus in grades 11 and 12. They can accumulate a total of 22 semester hours of university credit for successful participation.

    Texas Academy of Leadership in Humanities (Beaumont, TX)

    This is a selective dual-enrollement residential high school for gifted and talented students. All admitted to this honor's program receive a full-tuition scholarship. Academy students take university classes their junior and senior high school year. A typical student will have earned 60 or more college credit hours upon graduation. The humanities are promoted via seminars, community service projects, think tanks, and extensive cultural programs.

    University of Denver - Gifted Education Program (CO)

    The University of Denver offers one of the top graduate programs for gifted and talented education in the country.     This summer program provides gifted students (grades 7-10) the opportunity to learn challenging material at a rate suitable for their advanced abilites. The three-week long programs allow students a feel for the college lifestyle through residence hall life on campuses all over the country. Students are placed into either the Academy for Summer Studies or the Center for Summer Studies, based on admissions criteria such as test scores.

    Montclair State University offers a Summer Camp for gifted youngsters. Students accepted into the Summer Camp Program will take three (3) non-credit academic course. Since the program's purpose is to provide balanced enrichment, each student is required for one course in humanities, one in mathematics and one in science. In addition each student will register for one cultural/recreation course.

    SPARK - Brown University (Providence, RI)

    This pre-College summer experience is where 7th and 8th grade students live on campus, take courses and participate in activities related to their interest and abilities in science. The courses are designed to provide an exposure to intellectual concepts.     The Summer Residential Programs sponsored by the Gifted Education Resource Institute offer "accelerated and enriched learning experiences in mathematics, science, the humanities, and the arts" for academically talented youth in grades 3-12. The program also presents the opportunity for students to interact and establish lasting friendships with cognitive peers.

    High Achievers (East Lansing, MI)

    Michigan State University offers this Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) summer program for high school students who are interested in earning college credits over the summer. Tuition, textbooks and transportation are all the responsibility of the student. The program takes place in June and July for one month.

    Kids on Campus - McHenry County College (Crystal Lake, IL)

    Kids on Campus is one of the programs offered at McHenry County College. Academically talented students are offered accelerated classes. Students must meet at least ONE of the following criteria: +/= 95% on at least one part of a standardized test or +/= 95% on a standard ability test. An eligibility form must be on file at the Kids and College office before registration takes place. Children in this program are eligible for Investigators classes.

    Michigan State University - Explore Africa

    This Michigan State University (MSU) Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program is a residential week-long summer program that gives students in grades 10 and 11 the opportunity to study the arts and cultural expressions of Africa through team research projects, daily language classes in Swahili and seminar discussions with African graduate students in the humanities and social sciences. The program is held in July at MSU and limited financial aid is available, based on financial need.

    Michigan State University (East Lansing, MI) - Mathematics Science and Technology (MST)

    This Michigan State University (MSU) Mathematics Science and Technology (MST) program is a two-week residential program for academically talented students who are currently in Grade 7 or 8. The goal is to match the intellectual abilities of talented adolescents with rigorous and challenging course work which provides enrichment, but does not duplicate or accelerate course work in the K-12 curriculum. The program is held each July and financial assistance is available.

    The Ohio State University - Exploring Engineering Through Robotics

    "This course will provide the gifted student the opportunity to be both introduced to the fundamentals of engineering and immersed in a robotics experience that will serve as an exciting, popular vehicle for the delivery of those fundamentals. While the focus will be on robotics, the course will introduce the student to the various engineering disciplines and teach him or her some engineering fundamentals."

    University of Pennsylvania Precollege Summer Program

    Talented high school juniors and seniors learn what it takes to meet the challenges of college life in Penn's Pre-College program. Students are offered a wide range of regular undergraduate courses in the arts and sciences. With certain exceptions (lecture/lab courses, microeconomics and intensive Spanish), students are encouraged to take two classes. In addition to their coursework, students meet new people, participate in stimulating discussions, special events and workshops and experience living independently, maybe for the first time. The confidence they gain helps them enjoy their freshman year at college, rather than find themselves overwhelmed with new choices and responsibilities.
