“Introduction to Marine Biology”

Put on your digital SCUBA gear and get ready to dive into the watery world of marine biology! Students will explore the diverse ecosystems of the ocean, from coral reefs to the deep sea, and learn about the incredible organisms that call these environments home. Together, we’ll learn how organisms survive and thrive in different marine habitats and how human activities impact Earth’s oceans, including through pollution, overfishing, and climate change. This course will take a hopeful and solution-oriented approach towards our own potential roles in marine biology. Through interactive lessons, engaging activities, and exciting projects, this course will inspire a deeper understanding of marine environments and our role in protecting them.

“Rhetoric and Critical Thinking”

Want to learn how to persuade anyone of anything? In this course, students will explore the foundations of rhetoric—the art of persuasion—and develop essential critical thinking skills. Learn how to analyze arguments, communicate ideas clearly, and approach problems with thoughtful reasoning. Students will gain the tools they need to think independently, argue effectively, and make well-informed decisions. This course is ideal for students eager to sharpen their minds, write more persuasively, build confidence in their communication skills, and become more thoughtful citizens of our increasingly globalized and information-heavy world. Students at high schools with rigorous humanities programs, such as the Stanford Online High School, can particularly benefit from this course, which will help them excel in their year-round classes.

“Introduction to Paleontology”

How well could a T. rex smell? How does studying fossils of creatures that lived millions of years ago affect us today? Uncover the mysteries of Earth’s ancient past in this engaging class on one of the most thrilling subjects in all of science: paleontology! Explore the science of fossils, prehistoric life, and ancient ecosystems. Learn how fossils form, discover the techniques paleontologists use to uncover ancient creatures, and investigate the evolution of life on Earth. After hearing about the instructor’s own experiences with paleontological research in the lab and in the field, students will feel inspired to appreciate the pure wonder and magnificence of the prehistoric world.

“Introduction to Greek Mythology”

If your student loves ancient stories of heroes and monsters—rich tales of bravery and trials featuring flawed gods, wandering warriors, and mythical beasts, all seeking to explain the universe, morality, and the origins of natural phenomena—this is the class for them. Over this six-week class, which will meet online for 50 minutes twice a week, students will gain an introduction to Greek mythology, study Ancient Greek myths, and understand why Greek mythology has permeated Western culture for thousands of years—and why it is still so relevant today.
