Project Title: Engineering Injectable, Conductive Hydrogels Doped with Graphene and Graphene Oxide Nanoparticles for Post-MI Cardiac Tissue Engineering and Robust Drug Discovery: A Computationally-Aided Investigation for Enhancing Therapeutic Efficacy
From the outset, Arvind's study challenged him to devise interdisciplinary solutions to common laboratory obstacles. For example, when his lab did not have the exact instrument he needed to measure the in-plane conductivity of his hydrogels, he adapted a voltage generator to design his own testing electrode—applying the concepts he had learned in high school physics. In addition, during the computational phase of his project, he sought to design an algorithm that could quantify the contractility of a beating piece of tissue using vector calculus models. Using a previously-published algorithm by a team at UCSF, he extracted a field of vectors that modeled the tissue’s displacement during contraction. From his intuition, he knew that the divergence of this vector field would provide insights into the magnitude of the tissue’s contractile force; however, he was unsure how to get there, since no previous study had attempted to perform such computations. Remembering the divergence theorem from his multivariable calculus class at school, he realized that, if he could calculate the flux that the vector field accumulates over certain surfaces about the tissue’s center of beating, he could easily get the divergence. His results did in fact reflect the pattern that he expected them to, which was awesome. Throughout his study, he was fortunate to be able to receive guidance, support, and training from his mentors at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, Dr. Oscar Abilez and Dr. Huaxiao Yang. They provided invaluable support, helping him engineer tissue samples that he could test and experiment with the properties of his hydrogels.
