The lower school is great! There are so many choices in classes and levels! One of there strengths is their philosophy which is honor the individual, meet their needs, and teach them to give back to the community! One of there weaknesses is that they don't teach grammar and geography! But over all the lower school is great!

I have attended Roeper since pre-school (before Stage I) and am now a junior in the upper school. Roeper has made me who I am today. Roeper has made me a leader in my community and not only taught me the importance of being an individual, but how to respect others and be part of a larger community. Roeper encourages students to try academic disciplines outside of their comfort zones. It seems to have been suggested that the lack of structure in the lower school inhibits the development of math/grammar/geography. My parents did not supplement my math learning from the lower school and I am now in AP Calc as a junior, as well as in advanced history and english classes. If a child is determined to focus only on academics and not on the social aspects of being gifted, then Roeper is not the environment for them.

Open environment is not for everyone. Your child may be gifted but make sure the atmosphere fits too.

The Roeper School saved my 7yr old son. He has been at Roeper for a few months and he is a changed child. This school has let him become who he is suppose to be. They just get it, it is a perfect place for my son.

I have been going to roeper school all of my life, it has made think about everything I do and think. I have never had a problem with any of the teachers since I started in stage 1 at the lower school.

My child attended this school from kindergarten - 5th grade. I agree with a previous comment, it is NOT a school that can help PG introverts. There are serious behavioral issues in this school. There is little respect for peers and adults, and there are no consequences for undesirable behavior. We left because our child could no longer tolereate the disruptive social behaviors. The academics are rather weak for the PG. There is no grammar, geography, or history. There is not a formal math program on the lower campus. Only the most advanced math students get formal instruction with a part time math specialist. The remainder of the student population get their limited math instruction from the homeroom teachers. Its a great school if you have a highly talented to mildly gifted student who has serious social/behavioral issues.

We have been in the school approximately 5 years and tend to agree with all the above comments! It is the best lower school in this area for giftedness but it does lack in some areas. Our child really never learned correct grammar or had very much history or geography. Yes, a lot of the work is done at home with the parents however being amongs other gifted children is a blessing. Much should be said about the philosophy of the school, they truly care about the individual and have a deep need to help other people and the enviroment. I would not have choosen any other beginning for my childs education.

We moved here for our children to attend Roeper with the greatest of expectations and excitement. It has been both a disappointment and a pleasure.

Our younger son has benefitted from the whole child philosophy and two very loving teachers. He loves the school and enjoys himself immensely. Still, he does most of his core academic work at home. He is in his second year in stage II.

Our older son got much less from Roeper. Despite the vision statement that the school will meet individual needs, it was not able to do so for him. Maybe part of it was the luck of the draw with teachers. He was constantly given work below his ability level. We heard the same comments from them about social issues coming before academics that we had heard in our previous public school at less expense. He spent one full year in stage III and part of another. We were unable to get him appropriate accomodations and chose to put him in public school earlier this year. He has now skipped two full grades and three for math with the plan to move ahead another 2 years for math.

I'm in my Senior year at Roeper and have attended since 4th grade. The school has enriched my life beyond belief. I am a strong, confident, individual and I owe that to the Roeper School

I attended this school from preschool all the way through high school and tell people it saved my life. I HIGHLY recommend the school. The school is continually improving and is in the process of building and making many positive changes. Having worked in many other schools since my days at Roeper, I can say that it is the best educational environment I have ever seen. Anyone in the metro Detroit area with gifted children needs to look at this school. It truly is the best.

My child started in January as a 2nd year, stage II. The staff is wonderful. They understand and love these children. They deal with their emotional issues as well as the acedemic.
Parent on 5/17/2014
Roeper has been a blessing for our daughter. She was in Stage 2 for a year and is now moving to stage 3. They were able to first concentrate on non-academic areas that need encouragement and now are able to have a balanced academic-social-emotional program. There are both new head of school and lower head of schools starting in Sept. 2004. Should be interesting. Everyone else we have encountered has been wonderful.
Parent on 5/13/2014
They have a full understanding of the gifted child's needs.

I went to Roeper for four years in the early '80s. Those four years were the best part of my formal education. They treated giftedness in a holistic manner and the curriculum didn't simply throw harder and more work at you - it provided a richer, deeper understanding of the world and our place in it. The critical thinking skills, empathy, and joy of learning that I gained there have become my greatest joys as an adult. The goal of Roeper is not to get everybody into Harvard (although many Roeperians are accepted there!) Rather, it is to realize the full potential and happiness of every child regardless of whether that end is conventionally impressive or prestigious.
Student on 2/25/2009
I transferred to Roeper from a public school at the beginning of my 10th grade year. By far, this was the best decision of my life. The academics are amazing, the teachers and faculty are among the most qualified and dedicated that I have ever heard of, and the other students are incredibly caring. I LOVE it here!!!
Student on 1/21/2009
I attended Roeper for twelve years, and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. Not only was I stimulated intellectually, I grew up surrounded by incredible people. This is the absolute best school for any gifted child who can handle the level of freedom offered.
