South Carolina Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities

The Governor's School for the Arts & Humanities is a public coeducational high school located in Greenville, South Carolina. This nine-month residential program opened in the fall of 1999 to serve artistically talented students of South Carolina and to be a resource for their teachers. Students apply and audition in five art areas: Creative Writing, Dance, Drama, Music, and Visual Arts. A summer program is also available.

This is a great school concept, however it is not for every student. The art areas are strong. Many of the high schools elsewhere in the state have better academic records.

My daughter did not have a good experience at this school as there are many problems at that need to be addressed. I would advise keeping your artistic child in a local program if they are happy and well-adjusted.

I attended the Academy summer program and am currently a visual arts senior in the residential program. That school is the best thing that ever happened to me. The student population of 240 offers a tight knit community. The population is generally friendly and the teachers are amazing. It's easy to develop close relationships with them and they show a great deal of concern for their students. The first year is a rough transition in the residential program, but well worth it. I am forever greatful for the chance this place gave me to go into the art world and real life with knowledge beyond what any normal high schooler has. The program is amazing, but you'll only get out of it what you put in. If you're willing to work hard, take harsh, but useful criticism, and aren't afraid to take a realistic look on your future, this is the place for you. -VA Class of '08!

I was fortunate enough to attend the two-year residential program in visual arts. It was the best experience of my life. I met life long friends and got a wonderful education not only in the arts, but also in academic fields. Downtown Greenville was our home. No one could ask for a better high school for gifted and talented students.

I love the Governor's School! It is such an excellent place for people who are driven and know that they want to pursue the arts later on in life. I'm a veteran of the first Discovery Summer Program and I can't wait to go back and attend the Academy, and maybe even the Residential High School.

I attended the Arts School in the summer of 1994. While I cannot comment on current situations, the school was a wonderful and meaningful opportunity for me. It gave me confidence, while strengthening my ability as a musician. Because of the difficult and full schedule, we learned a great deal about our craft, while also learning if we could 'hack' it as an artist. This school is demanding, but well worth the money in my book!
