    A Mind at a Time
    BOOK REVIEW (Davidson Institute) - Are you interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the learning process? If so, A Mind at a Time by Dr. Mel Levine is just the book you are looking for! Based on years of experience as a developmental-behavioral pediatrician and director of the Clinical Center for the Study of Development and Learning at the University of North Carolina Medical School, Dr. Levine has developed his own model that dissects the learning process into eight neurodevelopmental systems: attention control, memory, language, spatial ordering, sequential ordering, motor, higher thinking, and social thinking. His theory is that struggling students are experiencing a breakdown in one or more of these areas.

    BOOK REVIEW (2e Newsletter) - It's not often that stories about the needs of the gifted are the basis for stories in the media. In 2004 things seemed to have changed. First, the book Genius Denied and then the Templeton Report: A Nation Deceived, called attention to the plight of our brightest students. Newspapers, magazines, radio and television programs finally started to discuss how attitudes and policies in the United States shortchange students with tremendous potential.

As of 2010, this book is out of print, but the author has published an updated and revised edition with Jossey-Bass that has been re-titled, Friends Forever: How Parents Can Help Their Kids Make and Keep Good Friends, which is available on Kindle.
    Growing Up Gifted: Developing the Potential of Children at Home and at School
    BOOK REVIEW (Davidson Institute) - This article offers a brief review of Barbara Clark's Growing Up Gifted. Clark provides an overview of the research on acceleration (or grade skipping) for highly gifted children. The research shows "almost uniformly positive results." Clark lists several advantages for accelerating highly gifted students.

    BOOK REVIEW (Davidson Institute) - Regardless of whether or not a reader shares all of the views presented by these authors, he or she will undoubtedly come away from this book feeling considerably more informed about the central issues of gifted secondary education and more capable of serving the needs of gifted adolescents.

Written by Marilyn Lane, this book aims to help adults normalize and develop their giftedness.
    Losing Our Minds: Gifted Children Left Behind
    BOOK REVIEW (Davidson Institute) - Losing Our Minds is a welcome addition to the literature on understanding and supporting bright young people, who are too often overlooked and therefore not provided with opportunities for appropriate learning environments. In addition to the compelling narrative punctuated with case studies, the book focuses on solutions to identified problems.
    Millicent Min, Girl Genius
    BOOK REVIEW (Davidson Young Scholars) - This article offers seven book reviews of the novel Millicent Min, Girl Genius from Davidson Young Scholars. The 2003 book by Lisa Yee, about an 11-year-old girl attending high school, received mixed reviews from our seven Young Scholars who reviewed the book.     Misdiagnosis and Dual Diagnoses of Gifted Children and Adults
    BOOK REVIEW (Davidson Institute) - Misdiagnosis and Dual Diagnoses of Gifted Children and Adults addresses the development issues and implications of misunderstanding gifted young people and adults. The authors James, Edward, Nadia, Jean, Paul, and Richard emphasize the need for greater awareness of how giftedness (in the context of environmental factors) impacts the diagnostic process. In addition, the book provides ideas on appropriate interventions that will hopefully improve the quality of life for gifted individuals and those who interact with them.

This is a must read for parents of highly intelligent young people and an invaluable resource for professionals in the field.

This book offers a large menu of strategies, resources, organizations, tips, and suggestions for parents to find optimal learning opportunities for their gifted kids, covering the gamut of talent areas, including academics, the arts, technology, creativity, music, and thinking skills.
    Re-forming ( Reforming ) Gifted Education: How Parents and Teachers Can Match the Program to the Child

    BOOK REVIEW (Belin-Blank Newsletter) - Reviewed in the Belin-Blank newsletter, Vision, Brandy Case Haub writes that the reader-friendly approach of this book, combined with intriguing narratives of individual stories, keeps the reader’s attention and makes it a quick read. This book will be most useful for the audience Kerr and Cohn specify: parents, teachers and counselors of gifted and talented boys, who wish to understand and encourage their students.

    BOOK REVIEW (Davidson Institute) - Written by Priscilla and Patricia Vail, Smart kids with school problems: Things to know and ways to help covers strategies for helping students who are both learning disabled and gifted. The book also includes positive personal accounts of twice-exceptional students who have become highly successful learners in school.

    BOOK REVIEW (Carolyn Cook) - Talented Teenagers: The Roots of Success and Failure, by authors Csikszentmihalyi, Rathunde and Whalen details the findings of an extensive five-year longitudinal study that strove to answer two questions: How do young people become committed to the development of their talent? And, why do some young people become disengaged from their talent? The authors sought to find commonalities and differences between those teens that went on to use their talents into adulthood from those that drifted away from their areas of talent into jobs that required only average skills.
