Truman State University - List of Competitive Scholarships (Kirksville, MO)

Located in Kirksville, Missouri, Truman State University does not require a separate scholarship application for Competitive Scholarships, saving families the time and the hassle of finding a scholarship the student qualifies for. All materials submitted with a student's application for admission are reviewed in the competitive scholarship selection process. Scholarship consideration is given to domestic candidates who apply for admission by December 1.

http://www.dhe.mo.gov/brightflight.shtml Details here regarding deferred elibility and transfering schools without forfeiting the scholarship
Educator on 10/20/2008
A student will only remain eligible as long as he is enrolled in consecutive semesters. The only way a student can take a "break" and still be eligible is if they were out of school for employment with the government (i.e. military service) or not-for-profit (i.e. peace corps). A student who drops out will not be eligible for the scholardship when he returns.

I would like to know if a student drops out of school [college] in the first semester of the bright flight scholarship, then wants to return to school, can she/he re-gain the scholarship?

I received this scholarship 20 years ago. It is disappointing that the state has not increased this award proportionally with tuition increases in state schools. I see from another comment here that legislation was proposed in 2006 to increase the award, but apparently the legislation did not pass. Bright Flight is an excellent award which is based on merit only, regardless of a student's family's income. I would like to see the amount increased.

For those who can attain it, this can be a very helpful scholarship. Unfortunately, it now only covers about one-third of the cost of tuition at the University of Missouri, though there is currently (spring 2006) legislation filed to increase the award amount to about two-thirds of the tuition price.

If you live in Missouri, and meet the requirements, there is no reason not to take advantage of such an opportunity. Free money is never a bad thing.

Caution: Should you have a "Bright" student who wins this award but elects to attend an out-of-state college, the Scholarship is forfeited! Even though Washington University awarded my daughter this award as a transferring sophmore, the state took it away from her. She was only one of five students in her senior class (2003) who received this award.
