Explore Davidson’s Online Gifted Middle School Programs

Gifted students don’t follow a one-size-fits-all path—and their education shouldn’t either. That’s why both Davidson Institute and DAO offer multiple enrollment options. Whether your child wants to start by exploring just a few advanced subjects or is ready for a full-time online experience, you can find the best fit.

The infographic below breaks down these online middle school options for gifted students based on several factors.

Davidson Explore (For Early Middle School & Enrichment)

coursework? Davidson Explore offers a handful of à la carte courses designed specifically for gifted middle school students, including math, creative writing, and science. Taught by Davidson Academy Online instructors, these year-long classes give students a chance to experience the depth and pacing of advanced courses—all without committing to a full course load.

Single Course Enrollment (DAO)

For families who want to supplement their gifted learner’s middle school education with appropriately challenging classes, DAO offers single-course enrollment. With this option, students can take advanced geometry or English as part of their current curriculum.

One or two live, instructor-led courses happen each week—during the morning and early afternoon—and they run for the full academy year. Students should expect approximately 5-7 hours of weekly homework.

Full-Time Enrollment (DAO)

Perhaps your child is ready to leap into full-time online learning! Designed for ages 9-13 at the middle school level, DAO’s accredited curriculum includes 4+ courses, each with live instruction and real-time engagement. With a full course load, weekly classes, and a clear path toward high school graduation, gifted students are both inspired and supported at every step.

Keep in mind that DAO’s classes are not grouped by age like traditional academic institutions; instead, they’re grouped by demonstrated ability. Your child will connect with like-minded peers, building up their confidence and a sense of community. They will also receive social and emotional support, including academic advising, college planning, and access to counselors.
