Spelling Acquisition for PG/2e Learners
Davidson Gifted Perspectives is a video series that examines a number of different gifted-related issues and viewpoints.
During a virtual event on developing talent in language arts, a Young Scholar family succinctly described a common problem for PG learners: They said that their Young Scholar writes very slowly because they get too stressed out and preoccupied with ensuring that every word is spelled correctly. Can any of you watching relate?
The parent in the event recognizes that learning English spelling requires memorization of several rules and patterns, and the Young Scholar can recognize those rules and patterns in text that’s already written. Generating their own written work is where they run into trouble.
Here’s our Director of Family Services weighing in on how much to push “correctness” during spelling acquisition, and how to support Young Scholars through this developmental phase.
