Bullying and Conflict Resolution
Davidson Gifted Perspectives is a video series that examines a number of different gifted-related issues and viewpoints.
One of the unfortunate realities that Young Scholar parents share with the Family Services team is that their children, their Young Scholars, are the recipient of bullying by their classmates. No student deserves to be singled out and bullied by their classmates, so what can parents do if they discover that this is happening to their student? Are there special considerations to make for PG/2e students who experience this? How can parents help their PG/2e students develop life skills in two directions: first, self-advocacy skills to be able to remove themselves from bullying when possible or stand up for themselves; and second, the emotion regulation skills to stop themselves from retaliating or lashing out.
For PG students, bullying can also bring out deeper questions about fairness and fair treatment of others. Is there a roadmap for parents to follow when supporting their students through those questions?
Here’s our Director of Family Services, to share her thoughts and insights.
