Sensory Processing Triggers
Davidson Gifted Perspectives is a video series that examines a number of different gifted-related issues and viewpoints.
During a virtual event, a parent asked about their Young Scholar’s recent sensory trigger. When other kids say or do movements around “6-7” it is upsetting and triggering to the Young Scholar. The parents have already had the Young Scholar research the term to understand it better, and now they are looking for more tips. This parent also suspected that the Young Scholar’s hypersensitivity to laughter might also be a factor here, since kids use this as sort of an “inside joke.” In addition to OT, supportive teachers, and IEP accommodations, what can this parent do to support their student?
Here’s our Director of Family Services sharing her thoughts on the situation, and some coping skills that may help a Young Scholar move through triggers.
